While it’s acknowledged that forced induction can enhance a small V6, many still crave a powerful engine. A perfect example is this Ford Bronco Raptor, which swapped its 3.0-liter EcoBoost for a massive 7.3-liter Godzilla engine. With a few well-chosen modifications, it has ample power to spin its 40-inch tires.
The owner, Eric Long, known as @22broncoraptor on social media, frequently shares updates about his vehicle. The engine swap was carried out by Juicy Motorsports from Fayetteville, Georgia, with Justin Stamper as the lead builder. It’s worth mentioning that this isn’t just an ordinary engine swap; the team ensured that all of the Raptor’s drive modes function as they did from the factory, which will be elaborated on shortly.
First, let’s take a look at the powertrain. The Bronco Raptor now features a Super Duty V8 equipped with a Stage Two Texas Speed cam, an intake from Ford’s Megazilla crate engine, custom headers, and a 93-octane tune from 5 Star Tuning. Dyno tests reveal it produces 395 horsepower and 466 lb-ft of torque, which is impressive given the power transfer through the hefty Nitto Terra Grapplers. After accounting for drivetrain loss, this exceeds the stock power, as the 3.0-liter EcoBoost generates 418 hp and 440 lb-ft at the flywheel.
To manage the increased power, Juicy also installed a more robust 10R80 automatic transmission, replacing the factory 10R60 in the Bronco Raptor.
In the accompanying clip, Long demonstrates that he can still switch through all of the truck’s G.O.A.T. (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain) modes. These modes adjust various settings to optimize performance for different driving conditions, from general Off-Road to Rock Crawl and Baja. This modifies throttle mapping and manages the engagement of the Bronco Raptor’s locking differentials based on the selected mode. He asserts that these functionalities are “100% operational,” implying the engine swap doesn’t affect the Fox Live Valve suspension, which adapts based on the terrain. This is an impressive OEM+ upgrade.
The powerful V8 is likely to become even more efficient over time, as it includes an advanced vehicle interface device. This feature allows Long to share data files directly with Five Star Tuning and download custom tunes. He can also switch to a lower-octane tune for Baja runs when 93-octane fuel isn’t accessible.
In one of his videos, Long suggests that a supercharger might be added in the future, which would enhance performance even further. However, given the current strength of the setup, it might not be necessary. Personally, I would keep it as it is now, but it’s not my truck. I also don’t anticipate upgrading to one of these unless I become the owner of The Drive Dot Com!
