Mazda Revamped the CX-5 but Kept the Real Surprise for Later | Carscoops
Mazda has unveiled the 2026 CX-5 ahead of its anticipated launch early next year.
The new crossover is larger than the previous version and features a refreshed design.
It comes with a standard 187 hp engine, while a hybrid variant is expected to debut in 2027.
Since its introduction in 2012, the Mazda CX-5 has achieved remarkable success, selling over 4.5 million units worldwide, with more than 1.6 million of those in the United States, making it the brand's top-selling vehicle by a significant margin.
However, despite its success, the CX-5 has experienced a sense of neglect in recent years, particularly with the introduction of new models like the CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90.
A Recognizable Yet Updated Design
Mazda is responding to this perception with the third-generation CX-5, which incorporates an evolved Kobo design inspired by stylish and functional clothing that “adapts to different situations.”
The 2026 CX-5 is more of an evolution than a revolution, retaining its recognizable appearance. It features a striking front fascia with a Signature Wing grille, angular headlights that blend into the design, and a sportier bumper with prominent air intakes.
The sides have a sharper shoulder line and extended rear doors for easier access to the second-row seats, complemented by stylized side skirts and bolder bodywork.
At the rear, the design balances soft curves with sleek surfaces, highlighted by slim taillights and an updated liftgate featuring “MAZDA” lettering in place of an emblem. Additional features include a dual exhaust system, glossy black accents, and available 19-inch wheels.
The 2026 CX-5 also boasts a significant increase in size compared to its predecessor, with a length that has grown by 4.5 inches (114 mm), a wheelbase that has lengthened by 3 inches (76 mm), and a width increase of over half an inch (13+ mm).
An Enhanced and Luxurious Interior
The modern aesthetic continues inside, with a minimalist redesign of the cabin. Although Mazda has not provided extensive details, a tiered dashboard prominently features an optional 15.6-inch infotainment system with integrated Google services.
This larger display facilitates easy access to Google Maps and the Google Play Store, marking the largest screen ever installed in a Mazda vehicle. Entry-level versions are expected to feature a slightly smaller 12.9-inch touchscreen.
Mazda has opted for a “strategic reduction” of buttons, resulting in a cleaner and more contemporary look, although most controls are now managed through the infotainment system.
More details are expected to be revealed closer to the launch date, but the revamped CX-5 is equipped with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster behind a new steering wheel that bears the “Mazda” logo. There are also mentions of improved seating and an optional panoramic sunroof. A seven-color ambient lighting system will extend to the door panels.
With the increased dimensions, rear seat passengers will benefit from additional leg, knee, and headroom. The cargo area has also been enlarged, now measuring 2 inches (51 mm) longer and over an inch (more than 25 mm) higher, resulting in an extra 61 liters (2.2 cubic feet) of cargo space according to Mazda Europe.
A Four-Cylinder Engine at Launch and a Hybrid to Follow
At its launch, the redesigned CX-5 will feature a 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G four-cylinder engine that delivers 187 hp (139 kW / 190 PS) and 185 lb-ft (251 Nm) of torque, consistent with the outgoing model. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a standard all-wheel drive system.
Despite the familiar setup, Mazda has stated that the powertrain has been “recalibrated for greater flexibility,” aiming for sharper responsiveness while maintaining a more relaxed and quieter driving experience.
In Europe, the CX-5 will be available with an “optimized” 2.5-liter e-Skyactiv G gasoline engine, combined with 24V mild-hybrid technology and a brake-by-wire system. Although it benefits from electrification, this variant is less powerful than the U.S. version, generating 140 hp (104 kW / 141 PS) and 176 lb-ft (238 Nm) of torque. European models will be offered with both front-wheel and all-wheel drive options.
While this may leave some wanting, a completely new hybrid powertrain is expected to be introduced in 2027. Mazda has been tight-lipped about this development but has confirmed that it will utilize a new SkyActiv-Z engine, promising enhanced performance and fuel efficiency.
Set to Arrive Early Next Year
Although there is much to learn about the redesigned CX-5, the crossover is scheduled to hit the U.S. market early next year. It is likely to be priced higher than the
