The second-generation Urus will now feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain instead of being an electric vehicle.

Originally, the model was set to be fully electric, but the company suggested that customers preferred a different option.

There are indications that the upcoming Lanzador EV might also face delays, with a decision expected next year.

Lamborghini has been discussing electric vehicles for several years, but it seems they have finally acknowledged a difficult reality: buyers of luxury exotic cars are not interested in a completely electric powertrain.

Ferrari and Lotus have already reached a similar conclusion, so it is not surprising that Lamborghini has come to this realization as well. CEO Stephan Winkelmann mentioned this when he confirmed the postponement of the Urus EV.

In a conversation with Autocar, he stated, “We want to have a new generation again as a plug-in hybrid. This is something very important for us and for the customers.” He expressed that clients will be “very happy to hear about this.”

The timeline for the second-generation crossover's release remains uncertain, but Winkelmann suggested it may arrive around 2029. While this is still some time away, the company is currently developing new variants of the existing model, including a plug-in hybrid version of the Urus Performante.

Regarding the Urus EV, it could potentially debut in 2035, although that timeline isn't set in stone, as Winkelmann indicated that the company has flexibility to assess how regulations, infrastructure, and consumer acceptance evolve in the coming years.

Similarly, the Lanzador EV might also experience a delay, with a decision anticipated early next year. Nevertheless, Winkelmann has indicated support for a launch late in this decade. Regardless of the outcome, the model's timeline has already shifted from 2028 to 2029.

To recall, the Lanzador concept was unveiled at Monterey Car Week in 2023, intended to preview the brand’s fourth series production model. It featured a sleek 2+2 crossover design with a dual-motor all-wheel drive system and an interior largely made with sustainable materials.
