Tesla's New Challenge Offers Up to 436 Miles for Almost $10,000 Less | Carscoops
Xpeng has introduced their new electric crossover, the G7, which aims to compete with the Tesla Model Y.
This model is well-equipped and offers an impressive range of up to 436 miles.
It features a rear-mounted motor that generates 292 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.
Targeting both Tesla and Xiaomi’s newly launched YU7, the G7 arrives in China at a surprisingly affordable price. Starting at ¥195,800 (approximately $27,325), it is ¥67,700 ($9,448) less expensive than Tesla’s established Model Y.
While the G7 presents significant savings, its design is fairly standard. Nevertheless, it boasts a shark-nosed front characterized by Xpeng’s “X Face,” with a full-width light bar positioned above the headlights and sharp daytime running lights.
The rear of the vehicle showcases a power liftgate complemented by a sharply angled window and wraparound taillights. It also includes blue lights to indicate when the vehicle is operating in autonomous mode.
In terms of dimensions, the G7 measures 192.6 inches (4,892 mm) in length, 75.8 inches (1,925 mm) in width, and 65.2 inches (1,655 mm) in height, with a wheelbase of 113.8 inches (2,890 mm). For context, the G7 is 4 inches (102 mm) longer than the Model Y, while maintaining the same wheelbase.
The interior design is elegantly minimalist, featuring a heated two-spoke steering wheel and a floating 15.6-inch display that serves as both a digital instrument cluster and an infotainment system.
Even the base model is well-equipped with power front seats that include heating, ventilation, and massage functions. Additionally, the center console offers dual 50-watt wireless smartphone chargers.
Other noteworthy interior features include wooden armrests, an expansive panoramic glass roof, and a 20-speaker audio system, alongside a digital rearview mirror and a fragrance diffuser.
Additional highlights comprise a microfiber roof liner, a 256-color ambient lighting setup, and 39 storage compartments, including a washable frunk and a password-protected glove box. The G7 provides a cargo capacity ranging from 28.9 to 80.4 cubic feet (819 to 2,277 liters).
Rear seat passengers can also enjoy heated, ventilated, and massaging outboard seats, complemented by an 8-inch display and a fold-down center armrest equipped with two cup holders and a wireless smartphone charger.
The model features fold-down tables mounted on the front seatbacks, designed with integrated magnetic panels to securely hold smartphones or tablets, and these panels can be adjusted for optimal viewing angles from 0 to 90 degrees.
There are three available trims: the 602 Long Battery Life Max, the 702 Ultra-Long Battery Life Max, and the 702 Ultra, with the numbers indicating CLTC ranges of 374 miles (602 km) and 436 miles (702 km).
Regardless of the chosen trim, all G7 models have a rear-mounted motor delivering 292 hp (218 kW / 296 PS) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque, allowing the crossover to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in either 6.5 or 6.6 seconds based on the configuration. The vehicle can reach a top speed of 126 mph (202 km/h).
Charging is relatively quick due to a 451 kW DC fast-charging capability, which enables the vehicle to achieve 271 miles (436 km) of range in just 10 minutes. With an additional two minutes, it can charge from 10% to 80%.
Xpeng emphasized the G7's integration of chips and artificial intelligence, marketing it as the “world’s first AI car with L3 computing power.” The vehicle utilizes radar, ultrasonic sensors, an array of cameras, and up to three Turing AI chips.
This setup allows for numerous advanced features like “human-machine co-driving” and “high-speed intelligent assisted driving,” as well as functions such as summon and remote parking.
In addition to semi-autonomous driving technologies, the G7 includes several well-known assistance systems like adaptive cruise control, lane centering, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, and traffic sign recognition. Notably, it also has an automatic emergency braking system operational at speeds up to 81 mph (130 km/h).
Another exciting element is the “light-chasing” panoramic head-up display, developed in collaboration with Huawei, which is an augmented reality display projecting an image up to 87 inches in front of the G7. This feature is particularly beneficial for navigation and also includes a unique AR movie viewing mode that can project videos when the vehicle is parked, simulating the atmosphere of a drive-in theater.
