The sight of any BMW pickup is enough to grab an enthusiast’s attention, but what about this Neue Klasse version adorned with M livery? According to the story, it was one of two that BMW actually manufactured, and one is currently up for auction at Car & Classic.

This particular model is a 1965 BMW 1800 TI—one of the sportier variants, equipped with an M10 four-cylinder engine that received special treatment from Alpina. With dual Solex PHH carburetors and higher compression pistons, this engine produces 110 horsepower, which is 20 more than the standard sedan. According to the seller, one imaginative dealership deemed this as an ideal foundation for a service vehicle, thus specially ordering two TIs from BMW in pickup form.

The listing does not disclose the name or location of this dealership, but the vehicle for sale is a left-hand drive unit from France. If you examine one of the interior images closely, you’ll spot a badge on the glovebox door from a BMW garage in Clermont-Ferrand.

Regarding pickups, this one is quite unusual, even for its era. It retains the sedan's rear doors, but they open to access a midsection of the bed. The entire bed area is covered and can be accessed through a conventional trunk lid that lifts to provide entry to the rear section. Upon further inspection, it seems there’s a removable partition that divides the two sections of the cargo area, resulting in either a single-cab truck or a coupe with an exceptionally long trunk, depending on how one views it.

The dealership could load items in there and also secure additional cargo to racks that sit atop the bed, finished in a distinctive shade of BMW blue. Removing the false floor in the trunk reveals a spare tire, and there’s a hitch at the rear to support the vehicle’s expected dealership functions.

Was this 1800 TI genuinely converted to a truck at the factory in Munich? It's challenging to determine without examining supporting documentation. It appears as “official” as any such project could have looked 60 years ago, though time has inevitably taken its toll, evident in tears in the seat upholstery, worn carpets, cracked and inconsistent rubber trim around the rear glass, and some underbody rust.

It’s safe to conclude that this ute’s working days are over, but it would undoubtedly serve as a perfect conversation starter at a BMW or vintage car dealer today. There is no listed price or reserve, and bidding is set to conclude on June 22.
