Apple acknowledges that CarPlay can be cumbersome to use, even though consumers are enamored with the software. The tech giant plans to streamline it later this year.

On Monday, during the company’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple unveiled iOS 26, the next-generation operating system for the iPhone. A key component of this update is a revamp of Apple CarPlay, the smartphone mirroring software that enhances the experience within modern vehicle infotainment systems.

TL;DR: CarPlay is set to become more user-friendly, and Apple may have once again demonstrated to automakers its superior software design capabilities, even for vehicles.

Apple reported that CarPlay is utilized over 600 million times each day.

The new iOS 26 will introduce a redesigned interface, which Apple has named “liquid glass,” to the car’s infotainment display for a more cohesive look and experience.

Icons will now transition between light and dark modes, similar to those on an iPhone.

When a call is received, the entire screen will not be taken over by accept or decline buttons; instead, the interface will resemble that of an iPhone, showing a small window that alerts users of the incoming call with options to answer or decline.

For those who can’t wait to reply to texts while driving, Apple is introducing the option to send a tap back response, allowing users to reply with gestures like a thumbs up or question mark via the touchscreen. Additionally, users can now pin certain conversations at the top of their messages screen.

Apple has incorporated widgets into CarPlay for quick access to information, especially while driving. While full details on which iOS widgets will be available in CarPlay were not provided, the announcement showcased widgets for the Calendar app, Apple Home app, Tide Alert app, and Weather app.

Live activities have also been integrated into CarPlay, allowing users to track real-time updates, such as a flight’s arrival while en route to the airport, right on the vehicle’s infotainment display.

Apple emphasized that the same widgets and live activities developed for iOS on the iPhone will also function in CarPlay, suggesting these features will seamlessly integrate into the updated CarPlay.

Apple stated that all these enhancements are intended to “help you stay focused on the road.”
