Lexus has unveiled the European variant of the new ES, ahead of its 2026 market introduction.

This executive sedan features a choice of two hybrid and two fully electric powertrains.

In addition to its completely redesigned exterior, the new generation enhances comfort and ride quality.

While the Lexus ES has never been the preferred sedan in Europe, the Japanese automaker is clearly intent on changing that with this latest iteration. After its global debut at the Shanghai Auto Show in China, the ES will make its European introduction a month later, aiming to compete with established rivals like the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes E-Class, and Audi A6.

Moreover, the ES has been a part of the Lexus lineup since 1989, experiencing a gradual entry into the European market, reaching Eastern Europe in 2010 and Western Europe in late 2018. It was viewed as an indirect successor to the now-discontinued GS, though many argue it never fully found its place in the European market.

      New Design, New Powertrains

The eighth-generation ES features a complete redesign intended to boost its appeal. The exterior presents a modern look, with a body-colored spindle grille accompanied by sleek, slimmer L-shaped headlights. Hybrid versions showcase a narrower grille for improved cooling, while the fully electric models adopt a more minimalist front design.

The profile is now more aerodynamically efficient, characterized by a smooth, sloping roofline leading to a fastback-styled rear. The back is accentuated with a full-width LED bar and sharp shoulder lines, which create a more dynamic stance.

In terms of dimensions, the new ES has significantly increased in size. It is now 165 mm (about 6.5 inches) longer than its predecessor, with an additional 80 mm (3.1 inches) between the axles, contributing to a more spacious interior.

      A Tech-Filled Interior

Inside, Lexus has made significant enhancements to the technology experience. A standout feature is the massive 14-inch infotainment screen, the largest in any Lexus model to date, which can be personalized with various shortcuts and widgets. This is complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. However, the option for a passenger display available in China does not appear to be offered in Europe.

Lexus also guarantees a quieter cabin due to upgraded sound insulation and premium materials. Interior features include illuminated panels created using a printing technique called bamboo layering and synthetic leather embossing. The “Hidden Switches,” touch-sensitive controls that activate only when the vehicle is on, are a clever addition. For music enthusiasts, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound System option is available.

Comfort has also been enhanced with a new seating design that offers a higher seating position for easier entry and exit, a reclining rear bench, and improved support for front passengers. If you’re being driven, you will appreciate the front passenger seat's folding function that maximizes rear legroom. Additionally, there is an upgraded Lexus Safety System + ADAS suite.

      Hybrid And EV Options

The new ES is built on an improved version of the TNGA-K architecture, which underpins several models in the lineup, including the Toyota Camry and the Crown Crossover. The new generation includes a multi-link system at the rear axle, along with a new suspension setup and increased rigidity. Lexus states that these enhancements lead to superior ride quality and a more stable driving experience.

Regarding powertrains, European buyers can select from two self-charging hybrid configurations, available in FWD and AWD. The base ES 300h generates 199 hp (148 kW / 201 PS), while the more powerful ES 350h produces 244 hp (182 kW / 247 PS), both using the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.

For the first time, the ES is also available with fully electric powertrains. The FWD-only ES 350e generates 221 hp (165 kW / 224 PS) and has a 77 kWh battery, while the flagship ES 500e, which features AWD, produces 338 hp (252 kW / 343 PS) and includes a 75 kWh battery pack. Lexus has yet to confirm official WLTP range figures but anticipates the most efficient model could achieve up to 530 km (329 miles) on a single charge.

      Availability

Sales of the new Lexus ES in Europe are expected to commence in Spring 2026, with final pricing and detailed specifications to be revealed closer to its introduction. Whether this new generation can impact the dominance of European luxury sedans remains uncertain, but it is certainly making a strong attempt.
