Stellantis Continues to Delay the Introduction of Its Ram Electric Vehicles | Carscoops

The fully electric Ram REV and the plug-in hybrid Ramcharger, which utilizes a gas engine as a generator, have once again faced delays.

Stellantis is postponing the launch of its electrified trucks due to a slowdown in the market and the need to address quality concerns.

The all-electric 1500 REV is now expected to launch in 2027 as a 2028 model year, which is four years later than initially planned. Similarly, the Ramcharger hybrid has been rescheduled for 2026, having originally been promised for late 2024.

This news is disappointing for Ram enthusiasts eager to get one of the manufacturer’s two new electric trucks, as both models have already experienced delays.

The all-electric 1500 REV and the hybrid Ramcharger were globally unveiled in 2023 and were initially set for production to begin in late 2024. That timeline was previously shifted to 2025, but now enthusiasts must wait an additional two years to obtain these advanced pickups.

According to Crain’s Detroit Business, Stellantis has moved the Ramcharger’s launch to the first quarter of 2026, while the REV will not be available at dealerships until summer 2027 as a 2028 model. The report identified two main reasons for these delays.

The postponement of the Ramcharger is attributed to Ram “extending the quality validation period” in order to resolve certain quality issues, as stated by a Stellantis spokesperson via email to CDB. The spokesperson did not elaborate on the specific problems, but indicated that the powertrain, which consists of an electric motor and battery charged by a large combustion V6, is a brand-new system for the company.

In contrast, Stellantis did not indicate that issues with the 1500 REV's fully electric powertrain contributed to its delay. Instead, the spokesperson attributed it to market dynamics, notably a “slowing consumer demand” for half-ton BEV trucks.

Given the rapid evolution of technology and consumer expectations, we can only hope that when the trucks eventually begin production in Sterling Heights, Michigan, they still feel innovative and appealing, albeit several years later than initially anticipated.

While the delays are unfortunate, at least these trucks have not been canceled entirely, unlike the heavy-duty electric pickup that Ram discontinued last year. Moreover, there are positive developments for the brand, as it was announced a few weeks ago that Ram plans to introduce 25 new products over the next 18 months, with the first unveiling set for June 8.

Among the upcoming models is a smaller truck, though it remains uncertain if it will compete with midsize pickups like the Ford Ranger or target the smaller Maverick.
