The Cybertruck was expected to lead in sales, but it is now being outperformed by a Ford model.

A recent report indicates that the Ford F-150 Lightning is surpassing the Tesla Cybertruck in sales. Registration figures show that more Fords than Cybertrucks were registered in March and throughout the first quarter.

The Cybertruck has struggled to attract consumers, as Tesla has made promises that it failed to keep.

Remember when Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed that demand for the Cybertruck was “off the charts” and that the company had over a million reservations? That seems like a distant memory, as interest in the electric pickup has waned significantly.

While the Cybertruck was anticipated to take the lead, it is currently in second place to the Ford F-150 Lightning. According to Auto News, which references registration data from S&P Global Mobility, 2,598 Lightning models were registered in March compared to 2,170 Cybertrucks. Though this is only a difference of 428 units, it signifies a notable victory for Ford and a setback for Tesla.

Moreover, this situation is not an isolated case; during the first quarter, a total of 7,913 electric Ford pickups were registered in the U.S., putting Ford 787 units ahead of Tesla, which had 7,126 registrations.

The factors behind the Cybertruck’s lackluster performance are clear, as the production model has fallen short of previous commitments. In 2019, Tesla announced that the starting price for an entry-level variant with rear-wheel drive and over 250 miles of range would be $39,900.

Fast forward to now, and the least expensive model is priced at $69,990 with rear-wheel drive, offering approximately 350 miles of range. While the added range is beneficial, the price increase of $30,090 is far from favorable.

Interestingly, the rear-wheel drive version now costs more than what was originally expected for the dual-motor all-wheel drive model, which was anticipated to start at $49,900; it currently has a price tag of $79,990.

While these major changes were revealed in November 2023, the situation for Tesla and the Cybertruck has only deteriorated. Notably, Elon Musk and his company have become political targets, putting both owners and dealerships under scrutiny.
