Mercedes Plans to Resolve New CLA EV Charging Issues Starting Next Year | Carscoops
After initial backlash, Mercedes has announced that the CLA will be compatible with both 400V and 800V chargers.
Currently, the CLA EV will be restricted to 800V charging, but upcoming models will feature a converter.
The new electric sedan will come with two power options: 268 hp and 349 hp, the latter being all-wheel drive.
Mercedes has made several questionable choices lately, and one of the most confusing was limiting the CLA EV to only 800V DC fast-charging stations. This significantly narrowed the options for owners to recharge, which seems puzzling given that limited charging infrastructure is often cited as a primary reason for reluctance in purchasing electric vehicles.
The decision was so perplexing that it led to questioning their reasoning, to which we now have clarity. Mercedes aimed to highlight the CLA’s 320 kW DC fast-charging capability, offering up to 202 miles (325 km) of range in just 10 minutes.
While this provides some context, the company has now disclosed that future U.S. versions will be able to charge at both 400V and 800V stations.
As a spokesperson for Mercedes-Benz USA stated, “Following the initial limited delivery of vehicles later this year to demonstrate the CLA’s rapid charging features, U.S. customer orders in 2026 will include a converter and will support charging at both 400V and faster 800V stations.” They added that this means the vehicle will be able to access over 140,000 charging stations across the country.
Although the initial communication was unclear, Mercedes did attempt to clarify their reasoning. “Charging point technologies differ globally, and the networks available in the U.S. and Europe vary. We’re dedicated to providing our customers with the best experience and believe that 800V fast-charging provides the most convenient solution.”
While faster charging speeds are indeed a positive aspect, the significant limitation on charging locations is not. Ultimately, it appears that Mercedes has come to realize this.
