BMW has introduced a version of the Vision Driving Experience concept without camouflage.

This performance-oriented electric vehicle features luminescent paint and a UV-reactive film.

The “Heart of Joy” super brain will drive all forthcoming BMW Neue Klasse electric vehicles.

BMW has presented a new version of its Vision Driving Experience concept at the Shanghai Auto Show. While it’s not officially an electric M3, it comes quite close for now. This prototype, which hints at the future of performance electric vehicles, has removed its camouflage and showcased more of the design language that will characterize BMW’s Neue Klasse series.

The Vision Driving Experience was initially unveiled in February but had been concealed under lackluster camouflage until now. BMW has unveiled it now with a distinctive “special luminescent paint” that employs light-sensitive pigments to recharge in daylight and glow in the dark. Additionally, a unique film on the rear bodywork creates a yellowish gradient under UV light.

A Glimpse of the Future (and Some Colorful Wheels)

Not surprisingly, the electric M3—apologies, the Vision Driving Experience—shares numerous design features with the Vision Neue Klasse concept from 2023, though with enhanced bumpers. Notable characteristics include active aerodynamics and wheels that light up in various colors. These rims act like a mood ring for the vehicle: they turn green during acceleration, blue when recovering energy, and orange when braking.

Test drivers Jens Klingmann and Elias Houndtonji handled the Vision Driving Experience during BMW’s Brand Night, demonstrating the car’s performance in the dark. They tested the quad-motor powertrain and advanced torque-vectoring system, showcasing the vehicle's handling capabilities.

      Torque Numbers That Raise Questions

Now, let’s discuss torque. BMW asserts that the electric powertrain produces an astonishing 13,269 lb-ft (17,990 Nm) of torque. Yes, that figure is accurate, but it’s likely measured at the wheels rather than the crankshaft, because unless the laws of physics have changed, that number seems implausible. Nevertheless, the “Heart of Joy” super brain manages nearly everything, from driving dynamics to braking, energy recovery, and steering.

BMW has made it clear that the Vision Driving Experience concept “was designed for development purposes only and is not intended for series production.” However, the Neue Klasse design will progressively be integrated into BMW’s entire lineup, encompassing both electric and internal combustion models. Similarly, the “Heart of Joy” super brain will be incorporated into upcoming electric vehicles, including those from the BMW M division, which means some of that advanced technology will feature in future performance models.

      New Models and the iX3

BMW has announced plans to launch over 40 new and refreshed models by 2027. The first of these, the fully electric iX3, will commence production at the Debrecen plant in Hungary by the end of 2025. This SUV will be followed by a sedan in 2026, likely named the i3, which is expected to serve as an electric alternative to the BMW 3 Series. Thus, if you’ve been wishing for an electrified 3 Series, it appears your desire is on the verge of being fulfilled.

The electric sedan will likely resemble the original Vision Neue Klasse concept most closely, with the BMW M version drawing significant inspiration from the Vision Driving Experience presented here.
