BYD's Concepts Focus on Gold, Dragons, and Video Games | Carscoops
BYD is set to reveal two striking concept cars at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, combining elements of Chinese mythology with tuning culture.
The company has teased two heavily modified electric vehicles (EVs) scheduled to debut at the event in China.
These models are inspired by the video game “Black Myth: Wukong,” showcasing dragon designs and gold accents.
The vehicles, which are based on the BYD Han L and the Denza Z9 GT, are expected to be unique showpieces designed to attract attention.
Scheduled to start on April 23, the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show will be another opportunity for local Chinese automakers to showcase their capabilities. BYD plans to unveil a variety of production vehicles, but the two concept cars drawing inspiration from the popular game Black Myth: Wukong and Chinese mythology are anticipated to be the main attraction.
BYD's partnership with “Black Myth: Wukong” was announced in October 2024, aiming to “protect Chinese ancient monuments and national treasures." This event marks the first time the automaker will display vehicles that reference the game.
The concepts appear to be derived from the BYD Han L sedan and the Denza Z9 GT shooting brake. Starting with the Han L, it boasts a large rear wing resembling dragon skin texture, complemented by matching canards and a splitter on the front bumper, side skirts, mirror caps, and rear bumper extensions, all riding on large alloy wheels.
The Denza Z9 GT is adorned in gold and brown, evoking the image of a vehicle suitable for a Chinese emperor. Its exterior features dragon sculptures and designs incorporating traditional motifs. Notable enhancements include a redesigned front bumper with yellow LEDs, broad fenders, and a customized set of gold-finished alloy wheels.
BYD has provided teasers of these models without much detail. However, fans have identified their basis. It is anticipated that they will remain as one-offs, aimed at intriguing automotive enthusiasts within the gaming community.
It is unclear whether the modified Han L and Denza Z9 GT will have any performance or chassis enhancements compared to the standard models. Nevertheless, with an impressive output of 952 hp from three electric motors, the Denza Z9 GT does not seem to require upgrades.
As noted on Wikipedia, “Black Myth: Wukong” is an action RPG inspired by the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West. It was released by Game Science in August 2024 and sold 20 million copies within its first month. The game has also generated a tourism boom at historical sites in China, which are depicted with remarkable realism.
We will provide updates on this story with official photos of the concepts when they are released tomorrow.
