The range-extender EZ-60 is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine that charges a 31.7 kWh battery pack, and it might be even more favored than its EV counterpart.
The Mazda EZ-60 is built on the same platform as Changan's Deepal S07.
Information regarding the battery-electric versions has not yet been disclosed.
The dimensions of the EZ-60 closely resemble those of the Tesla Model Y.
Recently, Mazda unveiled the first official images of the EZ-60, a fully electric SUV designed to compete with the Tesla Model Y and similar vehicles in the market. Thanks to new details and images shared by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, we now have a clearer understanding of what to anticipate, including the confirmation that the EZ-60 will also be available with a range-extender powertrain.
Although Mazda has been producing several appealing internal combustion engine vehicles and even set a sales record in the U.S. last year, it entered the all-electric vehicle arena a bit late. The MX-30 exists, but its high price and very limited range contributed to its disappointing sales in the U.S.
This places significant expectations on the EZ-60, which marks Mazda’s serious effort to penetrate the global EV market. Outside of China, including Europe, this compact crossover will be marketed under the CX-6e name, while its objective remains unchanged.
The design of the new EV draws inspiration from last year’s Arata concept, and although it's clearly identifiable as a Mazda, it presents a much more aggressive appearance than any other SUV in the brand’s lineup. The distinctive grille shape has been preserved, but the front features sleek LED daytime running lights and an LED strip located under the faux grille. Additionally, the Mazda logo illuminates for added visual appeal.
The newly released specifications reveal that the EZ-60 measures 4,850 mm (190.9 inches) in length, 1,935 mm (76.1 inches) in width, and 1,620 mm (63.7 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,902 mm (114.2 inches). In comparison, the Tesla Model Y is slightly smaller in most dimensions, measuring 4,790 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,624 mm tall, with a 2,890 mm wheelbase. The EZ-60 is also closely sized to the Zeekr 7X, one of China’s promising new EVs anticipated to enter global markets soon.
We also find out that the SUV has a substantial weight of 5,709 pounds (2,590 kg), which is more than many RAM 1500 models. It is built on the EPA1 modular platform, used by Changan’s Deepal S07. While the powertrain specifications for the fully electric version have yet to be revealed, some details about the range-extender model have been confirmed.
It features a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that acts solely as a generator, providing energy to a 31.7 kWh battery. This battery powers a 255 hp electric motor that drives the rear axle. Although Mazda has not disclosed range figures for the EZ-60, the related EZ-6 sedan R-EV offers an electric-only range of up to 99 miles (160 km) and can achieve a total range of 808 miles (1,300 km) when the engine is utilized to recharge the battery.
