Ferrari Elettrica Set for Release in October Following Years of Development | Carscoops
Ferrari’s hybrids stirred controversy among purists but performed well in sales, and now their first electric vehicle (EV) will undergo evaluation in six months.
Ferrari's much-anticipated EV is set to be manufactured at its new e-building facility in Italy. The Elettrica will feature an interesting hatchback/crossover style. Recent spy footage has revealed details about the new EV’s sound reproduction device.
This year is significant for Ferrari, as the company could see success in Formula 1 while also launching its inaugural EV. Although the notion of an electric Ferrari may not sit well with everyone, the groundwork for the vehicle has been in progress for years and is set to be revealed at their Capital Markets Day on October 9.
So far, we've seen the Ferrari EV undergoing testing on several occasions, but Maranello has been quiet about it. During a recent annual shareholders' meeting, both John Elkann, Ferrari’s chairman, and CEO Benedetto Vigna referred to this model as the Ferrari Elettrica, indicating that it has been in development for years.
"Electrification has been a journey we’ve been on for decades, beginning in Formula One and extending from our race cars to our sports cars," stated Ferrari Chairman John Elkann at the annual shareholders' gathering, according to Reuters. "We are thrilled to present the Ferrari Elettrica."
Elkann also highlighted the company’s commitment to developing its innovations internally, even for its EVs. “We can now affirm that all our essential electric components are designed and crafted in Maranello," he noted.
It remains to be seen whether the Elettrica name will be used for the production model, but many believe it likely will. Ferrari has a history of using straightforward Italian terms for its car names, as seen with the new 12Cilindri.
In preparation for building its first EV, Ferrari has significantly increased its investments in electrification. In April 2024, it launched a new E-Cells Lab in collaboration with the University of Bologna and NXP, a research center designed to improve the automaker's understanding of materials and the "chemical and physical properties of lithium cells." The company claims to have submitted 200 patents related to batteries over the past year.
Last June, Ferrari opened its e-building, where the next generation of its vehicles will be produced. Purists will be reassured that Ferrari maintains its Italian essence, which will remain unchanged with the Elettrica. The brand has stated that all its “battery modules, electric axles, inverters, and electric engines are developed and handcrafted in Maranello.”
Ferrari's EV is not intended to be strictly a sports car. Spy photos of testing prototypes suggest it may take the form of a hatchback-style crossover with four doors. Additionally, it is expected to include an innovative "sound reproduction device" that was patented by the company in 2023, allowing it to imitate the audio profile of an internal combustion engine.
