Mercedes has unveiled a retro-styled G-Class, named Stronger Than The 1980s.

These SUVs are available in classic colors like agave green or Colorado beige.

Only 460 units will be produced, each based on either the G450d diesel or G500.

Thinking back to 2023, amidst discussions of an electric G-Class, you may remember that Mercedes celebrated the production of the 500,000th G with a delightful homage to the 1980s 280GE. While that SUV was a unique piece, two years on, similar concepts have been made available in the form of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition Stronger Than The 1980s.

Although the name may not be ideal, the concept itself is appealing. It's impressive that Mercedes managed to introduce an all-new G-Class in 2018 while capturing the essence of the original. The combination of modern technology with classic style is spot on.

In total, Mercedes will produce 460 units of the 1980s-themed G-Class, with each model based on either the G450d diesel or the gasoline-powered G500 (known as G550 in the US). Buyers can select from two nostalgic Manufaktur paint options, reminiscent of the first-generation SUV's prime. One option is agave green, the same hue as the 500,000th G-Class from 2023, and the other is Colorado beige, inspiring thoughts of adventures through North Africa dodging camels.

Additional vintage details include orange turn signal lenses instead of clear ones on the fender tops, five-spoke alloy wheels, and black magno trim on the grille, bumpers, wheel arch flares, and mirror caps. The Mercedes star on the hood is also given a retro touch, and a genuine brand badge from the 1980s is placed on the rear.

Upon opening the door and stepping over the projection of “G – STRONGER THAN TIME,” you'll find part-leather seats featuring gray plaid fabric center panels, a nod to Mercedes’ heritage. In contrast to the bulky and utilitarian 1980s Gs, the new models include a Nappa-leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, Apple CarPlay, and a Burmester 3D surround sound system. Additionally, “1 of 460” is marked on the center console.

The G-Class Edition Stronger Than The 1980s is currently available for order in Europe, starting at £152,815 (approximately $202,300 at current exchange rates) in the UK. While prices for the US version are not yet available, the G550-based model is expected to be priced significantly higher than the standard G550's $148,250.
