Ford Australia has recently introduced one of the strongest small trucks available—the Ford Ranger Super Duty. Previously, if you required a Ford pickup that was exceptionally tough, you would have to upgrade to at least the F-250 to get a Super Duty model. However, Ford received feedback from numerous Australian fleet owners and contractors seeking a more compact truck that could still manage heavy tasks, and now that demand has been met. So, how does it stack up against the regular Ranger available in the United States?

I’m honestly surprised it took Ford this long to produce a Ranger Super Duty, as it seems like a logical move. It offers all the utility most users would need but is smaller and less expensive than the F-250. While it maintains a similar size to the regular Ranger, the Super Duty features a distinct ladder frame chassis that is sturdier, equipped with reinforced suspension, sturdy box, and mounting brackets. This means that not only is the frame stronger and more adept at towing, but it can also support a heavier load. The Ranger Super Duty has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 9,920 pounds, compared to the standard Ranger’s maximum of 6,170 pounds. It boasts an impressive maximum braked towing capacity of 9,920 pounds, while the usual Ranger can tow up to 7,500 pounds.

The Super Duty also offers a higher ride height, a wider wheel track, and improved ground clearance, with standard 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires. For those navigating particularly tough terrains, the underbody of the Super Duty is protected by high-strength steel skid plates. To accommodate the increased load, it features eight-stud wheel hubs with heavier bolts, replacing the standard Ranger’s five-stud hubs.

Although there is no new engine for the Super Duty—the 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel is one of the optional engines available for the Australian Ranger—it has been modified to better handle tougher jobs. For instance, all the air intakes have been positioned higher than usual, enabling the Super Duty to navigate deeper water. The all-wheel drive system is permanently set to “4A” (automatic four-wheel drive), ensuring power is directed as needed at all times. Standard features also include front and rear locking differentials, with the front being a modified version of the Bronco Raptor’s front differential designed for enhanced load capacity. Additionally, its two-speed transfer case has been strengthened.

Recognizing that no two workloads are identical, the Ranger Super Duty allows for some customization in the cab and bed. Australians can choose from Single, Super, or Double Cabs and select between a standard bed, flatbed, or various boxes tailored for specific work needs, such as emergency services. It appears that Ford has heeded the requests from Australia’s workforce.

It’s evident that the Ranger Super Duty is significantly more capable and durable than the standard version, as its name suggests. What's surprising is that Ford hasn’t yet introduced it to the U.S. market. With its remarkable specifications and extensive customization options, the Ranger Super Duty presents all the capabilities most contractors or off-road enthusiasts might ever require, in a smaller, more efficient, and cost-effective package compared to the full-size Super Duty trucks available here.
