Reports suggest that Mazda will discontinue four of its models by the end of 2025.
The list of models slated for discontinuation includes crossovers, sedans, wagons, and a hatchback. Unsurprisingly, only the SUV is anticipated to have a successor.
Mazda's upcoming lineup looks promising, featuring a new generation of the popular CX-5 and a hybrid rotary-powered sports car in development. However, it's best not to form attachments to some of the current models as several are set to be retired, with production ending before 2025 concludes.

The models facing discontinuation include the Mazda2 supermini, the closely related CX-3 subcompact SUV, the Mazda6 sedan, and the fully electric MX-30 crossover.
The MX-30: A Brief Existence
First on the chopping block is the MX-30, Mazda's inaugural production electric vehicle, according to Creative Trend. Its departure isn't exactly dramatic; production is scheduled to cease in March 2025. Unfortunately, the MX-30 never gained significant traction in the market due to its high price and limited range. Though it’s relatively new at just five years old, it won’t even receive a mid-cycle update, let alone a second generation.
However, the rotary range-extender variant of the MX-30, the e-SkyActiv R-EV, will continue for now, offering a glimmer of hope for rotary enthusiasts. Still, Mazda’s first foray into electric vehicles may ultimately be viewed as an experiment that didn't quite succeed.
Mazda2: The Conclusion of an Era (Perhaps)
Next is the aging Mazda2, which is reportedly nearing its end. The current generation of this small hatchback was introduced in 2014, with facelifts in 2019 and 2023. Its latest update occurred in 2024 with a new infotainment system for the Japanese market. However, these updates seem insufficient to keep it alive, as Mazda plans to phase it out before 2025 concludes.

Regrettably, there's no indication of a direct successor for Mazda's most economical model in Japan. The only hint is a trademark filing for the Mazda2e name, which could be intended for a future entry-level electric vehicle.
It's plausible that Mazda may step back from the supermini segment for a few years, guiding buyers toward an upcoming small crossover (more details on that later). Nonetheless, European customers can still purchase the Mazda2 Hybrid, essentially a rebadged Toyota Yaris.
The CX-3: The SUV That Could Have Been
The Mazda CX-3, a subcompact SUV that has remained largely unchanged since 2014, will also be discontinued in September 2025. Despite an update in 2018 and various adjustments over the years, the CX-3 has struggled to stay relevant in a changing market. It has already been discontinued in North America and Europe but is still available in Japan and certain Asian markets.
Fortunately for Mazda fans, a successor to the CX-3 appears to be in the works. Official teaser sketches released earlier this year show a compact design with a new look inspired by the CX-5 and a coupe-SUV profile. We know that the new generation of this small SUV will be produced in Thailand, though its debut date and availability in Europe or Japan remain unclear.
Mazda6: The Sedan That Arrived Just a Bit Too Late
Finally, we have the Mazda6 sedan, a long-time fixture in Mazda’s lineup, which is also set to leave. The current generation, launched in 2012, has undergone a few facelifts but never gained enough momentum to keep up with market changes. The Mazda6 was phased out in North America in 2021, left the UK in 2023, and was discontinued in Japan in 2024. It has also been removed from the Australian market due to non-compliance with regulations.

But don't start mourning the Mazda6 just yet. While Mazda has shelved plans for a new internal combustion engine sedan, the fully electric 6e will serve as an indirect successor to the 6 in Europe and the UK. This Changan-based model is already available in China as the Mazda EZ-6, offering both range-extender and fully electric powertrains.
