These Supermassive Car Hauler Semis Are Essential for China's Automotive Industry Operations

Car haulers traversing the United States usually transport around 10 vehicles at most. In contrast, the situation in China is different due to its much larger market, which is expected to see annual sales exceeding 31 million units in 2024. Consequently, automakers employ oversized haulers that can often carry as many as 30 cars. A recent video showed one of these XL haulers climbing a hill with a full load, leaving us both fascinated and impressed.

Shared on Reddit, the truck ascends a moderately steep incline in the right lane with its hazard lights activated, which is fairly typical. The initial observation is the configuration: there’s a single row of vehicles at the bottom, while the top has two rows, allowing the trailer to remain within its lane while maximizing its capacity. What might be more astonishing, or concerning depending on your viewpoint, is the fact that this enormous trailer is supported by only three axles. They must be quite robust, as that’s an enormous weight to carry.

Assuming each car weighs around 4,000 pounds, which is a conservative figure, we’re looking at a total of 120,000 pounds in vehicles alone, not accounting for the weight of the trailer. Are there large hauler-specific semis available in China? Not particularly. While we’re not specialists in Chinese semis, the decals on the truck suggest it’s a FAW JH6, which is still in production and listed on the manufacturer’s website. This model offers up to 453 horsepower, a 12-speed transmission, and a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 108,000 pounds, which might exceed the legal limit.

However, our goal isn't to discuss the legality of transporting 30 cars simultaneously, and such configurations aren’t particularly rare in China. A quick search on Reddit reveals many similar videos. There’s also a wealth of photos, including one from 2011 showcasing a truck hauling a comparably massive load featuring several second-generation Jettas. An interesting note: the MK2 model was updated and produced in China until 2013.

A quick calculation shows that this semi-truck is transporting roughly 120,000 pounds in cars, in addition to the large trailer, which features two rows of cars on its upper deck.
