What does Ford’s tagline, “Built Ford Tough,” really mean? It appears that this toughness isn't limited to just trucks. Ford became the first traditional automaker to reach an agreement with Tesla, enabling its electric vehicles to utilize Tesla’s Supercharger network with an adapter for the North America Charging Standard (NACS). Now, Ford offers an adapter that it claims is as robust as its trucks, boasting that it can withstand being run over by an F-150 Lightning.

When Ford initially introduced the NACS adapter, it promised to send one for free to any customer who placed an order between February and June 2024. After distributing over 140,000 adapters at no cost, Ford unveiled its new second-generation Ford Fast Charging Adapter, which is priced at $200. This new adapter allows any current Ford EV to charge at any Tesla Supercharger station, providing access to thousands more charging options for customers of the 2021-2025 Mustang Mach-E, 2022-2025 F-150 Lightning, and 2022-2025 E-Transit.

Ford also noted that this newly designed adapter can support the weight of its electric pickup truck. This might seem trivial, but customers might forget to return charging plugs to their docks, potentially causing costly mishaps when backing out of their driveways. Given that the Lightning can weigh up to 6,892 pounds, the charging adapter must be very durable.

In addition to the nearly indestructible adapter, it has incorporated the Supercharger’s Fast Charger Route planning feature into Apple Maps through CarPlay. Therefore, if you use Apple Maps, you can easily reroute to a charging station and create a route that guides you from charger to charger during long road trips. However, it's important to remember that the adapter is incompatible with any AC charging stations, including Tesla’s level 2 Destination Chargers; it only functions with DC fast chargers at Supercharger stations, so plan your journey accordingly.

Current customers might feel disappointed knowing they could have obtained the charger for free, but considering it unlocks numerous Superchargers nationwide, $200 is reasonable. According to Ford, nearly 20% of its EV customers visit supercharger stations to recharge. This figure is likely to increase now that more customers can purchase this adapter and access Superchargers.
