Mercedes is recalling 7,362 EQB electric vehicles in the U.S. due to a fire hazard.

The batteries in these vehicles may fail internally and potentially ignite.

Until a software update is received, owners should only charge their crossovers to 80%.

Mercedes is recalling a large number of EQB electric crossovers because their high-voltage batteries could "fail internally," leading to a fire risk whether the vehicle is parked or in operation.

A total of 7,362 vehicles are affected, including the 2022-2024 EQB 250, EQB 300, and EQB 350. However, it is believed that this defect could be present in all of these vehicles, prompting owners to exercise caution.

According to government sources, “Due to a combination of certain production conditions and vehicle usage, an internal short circuit in a battery cell in the high-voltage battery could occur.” They cited “variations during… early stage production” along with “local external influencing factors”—such as electric current fluctuations in charging infrastructure or possible mechanical damage to the high-voltage battery—as reasons why the battery may not be “sufficiently robust” when charged to a high level.

Mercedes received reports of fires throughout 2023 and 2024 and conducted an investigation into each case. Initially, the focus was on vehicles in China; however, the company could not eliminate the possibility of issues in other markets, leading to the decision to issue a recall, despite not identifying a specific root cause.

The company has stated that there have been no reports of related issues in the United States, attributing the problem to battery management software. Consequently, the solution is relatively simple, as dealers will only need to perform a software update to rectify the issue.

Owners will be notified by mail on April 1st, and customers are advised to charge their EQB to only 80% until the software update is completed. This poses a notable inconvenience, considering the EQB 300 has an EPA range of just 205 miles (330 km).

The batteries were produced by Farasis Energy in China, and this issue is not related to the Samsung SDI recall involving 180,196 vehicles manufactured by Ford, Stellantis, and the Volkswagen Group.
