Jack Roush’s company fell victim to a larger, organized vehicle theft operation.
Authorities located numerous stolen vehicles at an airport, resulting in a significant arrest.
Currently, at least two suspects are facing serious charges in Wisconsin.
Roush-tuned vehicles are undoubtedly appealing to many, and criminals are willing to seize the chance to take them. You might say that it’s common knowledge. However, the story takes an interesting turn as the vehicle was stolen from a Roush employee back in 2022. Recently, the FBI has recovered the vehicle and apprehended the man believed to be responsible.
Authorities suspect Diaunte Shields is the mastermind behind multiple vehicle thefts, including an incident on November 18, 2022, when two Ford trucks were stolen from Roush's premises in Livonia, Michigan. Weeks later, police reportedly spotted Shields in the Roush truck parked at a Milwaukee apartment complex.
According to documents acquired by the Detroit News, the FBI was tracking Shields following a series of thefts at the local airport. Between April 2021 and June 2022, police received reports of 20 stolen vehicles, including Ram trucks, Jeep Grand Cherokees, and at least one Dodge Durango. It's unclear why the focus shifted to Ford vehicles, but the FBI noted they observed a Ford Bronco Raptor around the time the Roush truck vanished.
What the thieves didn’t realize was that a tipster was collaborating with the FBI, informing them that Shields and two others were behind the airport thefts.
The informant also disclosed the location where Shields stored the stolen cars. When authorities executed a search warrant at that site, they discovered a solitary Dodge Challenger. Instead of recovering it immediately, they placed a GPS tracker on it to set a trap.
This tactic led officers to find Shields at the apartment complex with the Roush truck. Although the details of how officers ultimately apprehended Shields are unclear, he is now in custody. The Detroit News indicates that the truck was actually discovered in Texas.
“The conspirators sold the vehicles for less than their fair market value to individuals who knew or reasonably should have known the vehicles were stolen,” states the indictment. Shields is now charged with conspiracy to deal in stolen motor vehicles.
