The Type-Ami is arguably the coolest heavy quadricycle available, showcasing a redesigned exterior influenced by the classic Citroen HY van.

Italian coachbuilder Caselani has introduced a new conversion kit for the Citroen Ami.

The Type-Ami resembles a small version of the Citroen HY van from 1947.

The electric vehicle is priced at €13,000 ($13,400), while the fiberglass kit is available for €5,000 ($5,200).

The Citroen Ami is receiving a new look for 2025, but for those seeking a bit more character, especially a retro feel, there’s the Type-Ami. This conversion kit, developed by Italian coachbuilder Caselani in cooperation with the Citroen Style Center, transforms the compact EV into a vehicle that seems to have emerged from the post-war French countryside.

David Obendorfer, the designer behind this project, is known for reinterpreting classic Citroens and has made other proposals like the Mercedes-Benz Icon E W115 and BMW CS Vintage tributes, although these never came to fruition.

He is also the designer behind the Type H and Fourgonnette van conversions, which modernized the Citroen Jumper, Jumpy, SpaceTourer, and Berlingo, while preserving their vintage charm. Similar to those vehicles, the Type-Ami draws inspiration from the Citroen Type H (HY), a well-known utility van that was produced from 1947 until 1981.

      A Nostalgic Makeover

The reinvention is accomplished with a set of fiberglass body panels that replicate the unique corrugated metal of the original Type H. The kit includes all necessary brackets and screws for installation, while maintaining the original car’s greenhouse, door mechanisms, and lighting units. Buyers can select from nine standard colors, and Caselani also offers custom paint matching for those looking for something distinct.

Obendorfer noted that the Type-Ami was originally conceived as a one-off project for the company’s founder, Fabrizio Caselani. However, after showcasing the first working prototypes at the 24-hour Citroen 2CV race in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, it was decided to market it as a commercial offering.

To ensure adherence to Citroen's vision, the final design was polished with the assistance of a dedicated team at the Citroen Style Center, receiving official approval from the French automaker.

While the exterior undergoes a complete transformation, other aspects remain the same. The Type-Ami continues to operate with its 8-hp (6 kW / 8 PS) electric motor and 5.5-kWh lithium-ion battery. With a top speed capped at 28 mph (45 km/h), it is classified as a heavy quadricycle, allowing even 14-year-olds in Europe to drive it, similar to the closely related Fiat Topolino and Opel Rocks Electric.

The Type-Ami will officially debut at the Retromobile show in Paris on February 5. Pre-orders are currently available, with prices starting at €13,000 ($13,400). For current Citroën Ami owners interested in enhancing their vehicle, the conversion kit is priced around €5,000 ($5,200).
