Aston Martin's Initial Electric Vehicle Could Experience Another Delay | Carscoops
The first Aston Martin electric vehicle will incorporate systems and technologies from American EV startup Lucid once it is released.
The company had initially aimed to introduce its first EV in 2025 but has since postponed this timeline. Adrian Hallmark has mentioned that Aston has yet to determine whether the EV will be a completely new model or derived from an existing one. In the meantime, Aston Martin is planning to launch several new hybrid models.
Aston Martin maintains its commitment to releasing an electric vehicle but is not ready to confirm a specific launch date. It appears that any luxury buyers eager for an EV from the British brand may need to wait several years at minimum. However, one must consider how many people are truly eager to purchase an electric Aston when the brand also offers high-performance ICE models like the DB12, Vantage, Vanquish, and DBX707.
The automaker has been investigating electric vehicles for quite some time. In 2023, Canadian entrepreneur and part-owner of Aston Martin, Lawrence Stroll, stated that the first electric Aston Martin would arrive in 2025. Nevertheless, the company subsequently postponed the launch to 2026 and then suggested in April of the previous year that it might not be available until 2027.
Recently, Aston Martin's CEO, Adrian Hallmark, indicated that the company would introduce an EV "within this decade." This statement lacks specificity, but it is likely that the launch has been delayed again.
There are limited details available regarding this electric vehicle. During a recent discussion with Autocar, Hallmark noted that Aston Martin's original strategy involved launching an EV based on an existing model; however, he seemed open to the possibility of creating a brand-new model for their first electric vehicle.
"For a company of our size, you must either replace an existing nameplate and take a bold step or carve out a niche and introduce an incremental model first," he stated. "We haven't made a final decision yet. The initial plan was to pursue an incremental model, but we are exploring other options."
Hallmark emphasized the necessity for the company to remain adaptable in the upcoming years, stating that more hybrids will debut before the electric vehicle arrives. There will also be new hybrids released "up to 2035."
"[The path to electrification isn't as straightforward as it was three or five years ago, but the overall direction is definitely toward electrification,” he explained. “Our commitment is towards achieving carbon neutrality or net zero. However, to reach that goal, we will intensify our efforts and introduce more hybrid products before transitioning fully to electric."
When Aston Martin ultimately decides to release an EV, it will collaborate with Lucid. In mid-2023, Aston Martin signed contracts with the EV startup valued at over $450 million, granting access to Lucid’s cutting-edge electric motors and battery systems.
