The powerful, twin-turbocharged, all-wheel-drive Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X completed a quarter mile in 8.675 seconds, achieving a trap speed of 159 mph, according to testing conducted by General Motors. It also recorded a 0-60 mph time of 1.68 seconds during the tests.
GM released these figures on Tuesday morning, clarifying that the ZR1X was running on pump gas, using a stock engine tune, and was equipped with standard aerodynamics, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, and optional carbon fiber wheels. The tests took place last October at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan, where the track was suitably prepared for the run. While the ZR1X's best performance was 8.675 seconds, it consistently posted results under 8.8 seconds, indicating this was no one-time occurrence.
For skeptics, Chevrolet conducted a run with the ZR1X fitted with the ZTK track package (which includes Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires) on an unprepared surface, just for them. In this case, it completed the quarter mile in 8.99 seconds, achieving 60 mph in 1.89 seconds—still an impressive showing.
To accomplish these results, Corvette development engineer and test driver Stefan Frick utilized the hypercar’s Custom Launch Control feature, allowing him to modify the launch RPM and optimize wheelspin for the best outcome.
These performance figures are remarkable for any vehicle, but even more so considering the typical price tag of machines that achieve such acceleration. GM compared the ZR1X's numbers against several multi-million-dollar hypercars, including the Pininfarina Battista (8.55-second quarter, 1.79-second 0-60), Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut (8.77-second quarter, 2.4-second 0-60), and Bugatti Tourbillon (8.8-second quarter, 1.9-second 0-60), highlighting how the top-tier Corvette competes with cars that are literally ten times its cost.
The Rimac Nevera R—7.9-second quarter, 1.66-second 0-60—outperforms the flagship Corvette in all aspects, but it comes with a price tag of $2.5 million. A ZR1X, configured similarly to the one that set those record times, would be priced at $226,190, with carbon fiber wheels as the only optional feature.
