It’s impressive how much can change in a few months with the right drive. For instance, the Chevy Bolt has suddenly gained an additional seven miles of estimated EPA range.

On Friday, General Motors announced that the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt is now available for purchase, priced at $28,995 (including a $1,395 destination charge), and offers 262 miles of EPA-estimated range. This makes the Chevy Bolt the most affordable electric vehicle currently on the market in the U.S., taking over from the Nissan Leaf.

However, there are some conditions to consider. The Bolt's range is currently just EPA estimated, not officially rated by the EPA. Moreover, it seems that the Bolt has gained 7 miles of estimated range since its initial debut last fall, where it was rated at 255 miles. Interestingly, this additional range appears to have been found recently, as Chevrolet's own website still lists a 255-mile range for the model.

If the Bolt had maintained the 255-mile rating, it would fall short of every Leaf variant, with the top-tier Platinum+ trim offering 259 miles of EPA-rated range. The base Leaf models provide 303 miles of EPA-rated range, which is 41 miles more than the Bolt; however, those extra miles come at a cost of $2,490 more. This is a significant amount, especially in today’s market.

The Bolt is equipped with generous features even in its base version, including an 11.3-inch touchscreen with built-in Google, though it lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (which the Leaf includes), alongside adaptive cruise control, automatic climate control, and a Tesla-like NACS charging port. Importantly, the Bolt can be equipped with GM’s excellent Level 2 hands-free driver-assist technology, Super Cruise, but not for the $28,995 price point.

Chevrolet confirmed that the 2027 Bolt is now for sale and will be arriving at dealerships.

Note: This article has been updated to provide more specific details regarding the Leaf’s range and trims compared to the Bolt. The initial version mistakenly interchanged the top Leaf Platinum+ with the base S+ EPA-rated range figures.
