Toyota Unveils Its Most Refined GR Yaris Yet, But Securing One Might Be a Challenge | Carscoops
Equipped with a carbon rear wing, Alcantara interior, and enhanced suspension, the GR Yaris Morizo RR elevates Toyota's hot hatch to new heights.
Toyota GR Yaris Morizo RR incorporates lighter carbon fiber components.
The power output remains the same at 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
Only 200 units will be produced worldwide, with half allocated for Japan.
Just when it seemed that the GR Yaris had reached its maximum potential, Toyota introduced an exciting new variant at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The company unveiled a more aggressive and focused iteration of the rally-inspired hot hatch, named the GR Yaris Morizo RR. Although presented in prototype form, this enhanced version of the GR Yaris is set for limited production.
It shares its name with the high-performance Lexus LBX Morizo RR, paying homage to the racing alias of company chairman Akio Toyoda, and retains the GR Yaris’s signature 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine. The output is anticipated to match the current Japan-spec model, producing 300 hp (224 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. However, this model is not merely a cosmetic update.
What Makes It Unique?
A prominent change is the inclusion of a substantial carbon fiber rear wing, paired with a new front splitter and redesigned side skirts. Toyota has also fitted the car with a lighter carbon fiber hood, matte bronze wheels, and striking yellow brake calipers. The body boasts a new exclusive paint color called Gravel Khaki, which enhances its distinct appearance.
The updated aerodynamic setup is not just for aesthetics. The rear wing generates increased downforce, prompting a reworked suspension to better handle more challenging conditions, such as those found at the Nurburgring.
What Modifications Were Made Beneath the Surface?
Toyota made a significant alteration to the GR-Four all-wheel drive system. The previously available Gravel mode, which allocated torque at a 53:47 front-to-rear ratio, has been replaced with a new Morizo mode that offers a 50:50 split, similar to the former Track mode of the original GR Yaris.
Additionally, the brand took the opportunity to refine the electric power steering, promising an even more direct and responsive driving experience compared to the standard model.
Perhaps the most impressive upgrade is found inside the vehicle. The steering wheel has been redesigned for the GR Yaris Morizo RR, featuring a motorsport-inspired look. It is finished in Alcantara with yellow accents and includes custom switches for audio and cruise control, along with a unique gauge display for the instrument cluster.
How Many Units Will Be Produced?
The primary drawback is the limited availability of this model. Toyota intends to manufacture only 100 units for Japan, plus an additional 100 for select European markets. In Japan, interested buyers will need to enter a lottery via Gazoo’s official smartphone app, making the Morizo RR as elusive as it is appealing.
