Volvo has recently begun its electric journey in the U.S., and the Swedish automaker is already making a strong statement with its next-generation electric vehicle.
On Thursday, just weeks before the unveiling of the Volvo EX60, the company announced that this upcoming electric SUV aims for a 400-mile EPA-rated range and is capable of fast charging in the time it takes to refuel and grab a coffee.
Volvo mentioned that the EX60 can gain up to 168 miles of range in just 10 minutes when connected to a 400-kW fast charger. According to the automaker, the system can provide over 100 miles of range in "just a few minutes."
This technology is made possible by the EX60's use of Volvo’s new 800-volt electrical architecture, complemented by software developed in-house. This combination is designed to transfer energy efficiently, while lighter materials and reduced heat generation facilitate quicker charging times. However, Volvo has not yet revealed how this system is cooled or its thermal limitations.
The EX60 will be built on Volvo’s new SPA3 EV platform, which incorporates the battery pack into the vehicle’s structure through cell-to-body packaging. This platform also introduces mega castings to Volvo’s manufacturing process, which helps to lower weight and simplify production.
Volvo indicated that the EX60 will use electric motors that were developed internally, but specific power output or further details have not been disclosed yet.
Regarding the 400 miles of EPA-rated range, Volvo stated that while this figure is preliminary, it is based on estimates and calculations from the EPA testing cycle, specifically for a dual-motor model. If a single-motor version is eventually offered, it could potentially provide more than 400 miles of range.
While the exact size of the EX60’s battery pack has not been revealed, Volvo did mention that it will come with a 10-year warranty.
The EX60 will compete with the 2027 BMW iX3 and the Electric Mercedes-Benz GLC when the two luxury German EVs launch later this year. The BMW is anticipated to have around 400 miles of range, while the Mercedes-Benz is expected to offer approximately 320 miles due to a smaller battery.
Last year, Volvo announced that the EX60 will introduce a new seatbelt design, updating a concept that hadn't changed in 66 years. The multi-adaptive safety belts will adjust for various crash scenarios, body types, and even different driving postures.
The debut of the Volvo EX60 is set for January 21.
