A report indicates that Nissan is set to launch a redesigned Twingo, inspired by the Be-1, Pao, and Figaro, following the Micra.

Nissan is developing a new electric hatchback to be positioned below the electric Micra. Named Wave, it aims to evoke the nostalgic essence of Nissan’s iconic ‘80s and ‘90s Pike cars. This new electric vehicle will be manufactured in Europe alongside the Twingo.

Renault isn’t the only brand exploring quirky design influences from its past. While Renault has been actively resurrecting models like the 5, 4, and Twingo, Nissan is now making similar moves, leveraging its partnership with Renault.

According to Autocar, Nissan is preparing to unveil a compact electric hatchback named Wave, expected to launch next year. It will share production facilities with the Twingo and will sit beneath the Micra in Nissan's lineup. This approach follows Nissan's strategy of utilizing the new Renault 5 for its Micra refresh, highlighting a clear rationale behind this decision.

However, the Wave is anticipated to possess significantly more retro appeal compared to the Micra. It is expected to draw design elements from Nissan's ‘Pike’ cars from the late 1980s and early 1990s, known for popular models like the Be-1, Figaro, Pao, and S-Cargo. Despite being based on simple Micra mechanics, these models had much more character, akin to Renault's contemporary electric vehicles.

Beneath its nostalgic look, the Wave will closely mirror its Renault counterpart. It will likely feature a 27.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery designed to keep costs low, offering an estimated range of around 163 miles (262 km). It's intended for city-dwelling younger drivers and isn’t aimed at long road trips. A starting price of under £20,000 (€23,000/$27,000) will be crucial for attracting this demographic.

Nissan has not been active in this segment since the discontinuation of the Pixo in 2013. If the Wave successfully combines affordability, a practical range, and a touch of retro charm, it could demonstrate that small vehicles still hold significant appeal. However, it will face competition from its own Twingo sibling, as well as the upcoming VW ID.1 (potentially named ID. Up upon its 2027 release) and competitors like the BYD Dolphin Surf from China.
