BMW's Latest X5 Ignores the Trends Set by Other SUVs | Carscoops
A complete redesign introduces sharper styling, hybrid and electric vehicle options, and even a hydrogen variant for the upcoming X5, which is currently undergoing testing prior to its official unveiling.
BMW’s next-generation X5 features a refreshed look with a simplified grille.
Elements from the Neue Klasse styling are evident throughout the X5’s design.
An extensive range of gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric options will be available.
While the X5 hasn’t been BMW’s most adventurous design, it has avoided the more extreme aesthetics found in other models. However, the large kidney grilles of the current version don't enhance its appeal; they don’t completely ruin the appearance but certainly do not improve it.
The positive news is that a new generation is forthcoming, and initial indications point to a more refined design along with a diverse array of powertrain choices that exceed usual expectations.
BMW has begun testing the forthcoming X5, internally referred to as G65, taking a prototype north to Sweden for winter evaluations. Although still camouflaged, it’s evident that the SUV will incorporate design features from BMW’s Neue Klasse style.
Neue Klasse Meets X5
Similar to the updated iX3, the new X5 features redesigned headlights with sharply defined daytime running lights and a more technical front-end look. A gloss-black panel extends towards the center of the fascia, mirroring the layout of the EV and accommodating a pair of vertically aligned kidney grilles, which are still concealed under camouflage but are clearly discernible beneath the exterior.
The rear end of the new X5 is poised to make a significant break from its predecessor. It replaces the traditional taillights with sleek, horizontal LED units reminiscent of those on the XM. This prototype also includes a curvaceous rear spoiler extending above the window, contributing to the striking new design.
Interior Modifications
The interior is set for a comprehensive redesign as well. Recent spy images have confirmed that the new X5 will feature the same Panoramic iDrive setup as in the iX3. This layout includes a narrow display running along the base of the A-pillars and a sharply angled central infotainment screen.
Though the steering wheel on this prototype may differ from the squared-off four-spoke design of the iX3, it is expected to adopt a more traditional two-spoke design, with sufficient visual prominence to stand out.
Powertrain Options
Underpinning the G65 X5 will be BMW’s updated CLAR architecture. This ensures a well-known chassis with the versatility to accommodate combustion, hybrid, and electric variants without the need for a completely new platform.
According to sources from CarScoops, the combustion variants will include 40, 40 xDrive, 40d xDrive, 50e xDrive, M60 xDrive, and M60e xDrive versions. An X5 M version also appears to be in the pipeline. In addition to a variety of combustion-powered models, BMW will launch an all-electric iX5, available in 50 xDrive, 60 xDrive, and M70 xDrive configurations.
The lineup of powertrain options will extend further. Alongside gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and electric models, there may be a range-extended version of the iX5, called the Rex, offering a driving range of up to 621 miles (1,000 km). Additionally, the new X5 will mark BMW’s first mass-market vehicle equipped with a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain.
