During the holiday season, a vigilant reader named Steven informed us that Jeep discreetly removed the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4xe models from its online configurators. We were aware that these plug-in hybrids had faced a significant recall due to a manufacturing mistake that led to several customer vehicles malfunctioning. What we didn't anticipate was that Stellantis would need to halt production indefinitely, which now seems to be the situation.
You can check for yourself at Jeep.com. The Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe have both vanished from the “Electric & Hybrid” section, and there is no Build & Price feature available for the 2026 Wrangler 4xe. If you manage to access the 2025 Wrangler or Grand Cherokee 4xe, their pages redirect you to their standard gasoline models—hybrids are absent. It gets even stranger for off-road enthusiasts, as during the previous model year, the only way to configure a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk was with the 4xe powertrain.
The engine fire recall was officially announced in November, but within a separate notice to dealers, Stellantis buried some details that mostly went unnoticed. For one, Jeep had no solution available for the issue, indicating it would aim to implement a resolution by the second quarter of 2026. Additionally, in the interim, a stop-sale order was placed on existing stock.
Now, it seems this stop-sale has escalated into a complete pause. Is it temporary? That remains uncertain.
A Jeep representative provided the following statement to The Drive after our original article was published: “We can confirm that for declared safety recalls, such as we currently have with certain Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4xe models, a stop-sale is always enacted for any new vehicles on dealer lots as standard practice. Once a remedy is established with dealers, the stop-sale will be lifted immediately.”
It is somewhat peculiar that someone was assigned to remove the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe models from much of the Jeep consumer website, alongside the online build tool, particularly given that the situation arose from a recall. What will happen to the plug-in hybrid 4xe models?
Does anyone recall the last time Jeep chose not to comment on a 4xe's status? The Drive does.
