Toyota GR 86 Transformed Into an AE86 Tribute Featuring Pop-Up Headlights | Carscoops
The Neo86 enhances the Toyota 86 with '80s-style pop-up headlights, expanded fenders, and a nostalgic appearance, making its debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026.
Result Japan has introduced a styling kit inspired by the AE86 for the Toyota 86. This kit features pop-up headlights, custom fenders, and new bumpers. The Neo86 was showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon and will be available for purchase soon.
Although they may not seem related, both the original Toyota 86 and the newer GR 86 share a lineage with the AE86 Trueno from the 1980s, maintaining its rear-wheel-drive essence and lightweight, agile feel. However, they do not retain one of the most iconic features of the original—the pop-up headlights.
Japanese tuner Result Japan steps up by offering a new styling kit that effectively brings back the retro aesthetic. Rather than a straightforward restomod, this can be seen as a modern car infused with retro elements—a reverse-engineered tribute.
**Retro Appearance for a Contemporary Coupe**
The Neo86 kit rethinks the front, featuring a flat hood, functional pop-up headlights, and a classic-style bumper. Painted in black, the bumper includes yellow indicators and fog lights that evoke the AE86’s late 20th-century design.
The kit also includes wider front and rear fenders, emphasized by glossy black bolt-on extensions. A chin spoiler and matching side skirts enhance the profile. The demonstration vehicle showcases a black and white design, complemented by retro-styled wheels reminiscent of the AE86's original eight-spoke alloys.
Despite these modifications, the rest of the body maintains the smooth, rounded contours of the Toyota 86 platform. However, Result Japan has made a few updates to harmonize the rear with the overall theme, including a ducktail spoiler, aftermarket LED taillights, and a redesigned rear bumper framing dual exhaust pipes.
**While the Neo86 package focuses on aesthetics, it can easily integrate performance and chassis upgrades. The Toyota 86 comes equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-four boxer engine, generating 197 horsepower (147 kW / 200 PS) that is transmitted to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.**
**Pricing and Availability**
The Neo86 will publicly debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 on January 9, where Result Japan will begin accepting pre-orders. Pricing information is currently unavailable but should be announced during the event.
Result Japan has stated that the kit will not be exclusive to domestic markets. The company intends to offer it globally, and based on the prototype, it appears compatible with a variety of models, including the Toyota 86, GT 86, Scion FR-S, and the first-generation Subaru BRZ.
