Alpine has introduced the electric A390 in the UK, starting at £61,390.
The more powerful tri-motor GTS variant is priced at £69,390.
Porsche's entry-level Macan Electric costs £68,600 but lacks all-wheel drive.
Alpine aims for its A390 crossover to draw customers away from the Porsche Macan Electric, although it currently lacks the brand recognition to compete directly. To address this, Alpine has set prices that make the French model an attractive option for those considering a Macan.
The A390 begins at £61,390 in the UK, which is notably lower than even the most affordable Macan Electric. This is significant as the starting price for the Porsche is £68,600, and it only delivers power to the rear wheels with 355 hp (360 PS / 265 kW). In contrast, Alpine's entry-level model features all-wheel drive and produces 394 hp (400 PS / 294 kW), undercutting Porsche's price by over seven grand.
In the next tier, the situation becomes even more difficult for Porsche. The A390 GTS, which boasts 464 hp (470 PS) from its tri-motor configuration, costs £69,390. This price is lower than the £71,900 Macan 4, which has 400 PS (408 PS / 300 kW), and significantly less than the £77,100 Macan 4S, though it should be noted that the latter offers 509 hp (516 PS / 380 kW).
Porsche also has more powerful GTS and Turbo options that Alpine cannot presently match.
Macan Charges Faster
Both A390 variants utilize an 89 kWh battery and promise up to 345 miles (555 km) of WLTP range in GT form or 312 miles (502 km) in the GTS. They can charge at up to 190 kW, enabling a charge from 15 to 80 percent in about 25 minutes. These range figures are comparable to the 90 kWh battery found in the AWD Macan 4 and S, although those models can charge at up to 270 kW.
The Premiere Edition serves as a bridge between the two A390 models, featuring the same mechanical components as the base model while adding a black finish to the 20-inch wheels, a black roof, a French flag on the rear quarter, Alpine-branded brake calipers, Sabelt sports seats, and a 22 kW AC charger. Most of these features are also present on the top-spec GTS.
US Expansion On Hold
Returning to the brand discussion, it's clear that Porsche not only sells cars but also its identity, and the Macan significantly benefits from this. The A390 will face challenges in establishing its identity, and if Alpine were to launch in the US, it would essentially be starting from ground zero.
However, that launch won't occur anytime soon, as the company has decided to indefinitely postpone it after 2025 due to President Trump's tariffs. If the A390 were to reach the US market, it would need to be significantly cheaper than in Europe. American Porsche enthusiasts can buy a base Macan Electric for $78,000, with the Macan 4 just a short distance away at $81,600 and the Macan 4S priced at $88,000.
