Kia's Latest Hatchback Omits Low-End Trims Yet Still Appears Affordable | Carscoops

The new K4 Hatchback skips the less expensive trims while enhancing power, space, and value, available in three well-equipped variants.

Kia’s K4 Hatch omits the base LX and LXS trims found in the sedan model.

Starting prices are set at $24,890, excluding a $1,195 destination charge.

Both the EX and GT-Line trims come with a 147 hp naturally aspirated engine.

While the design of the Kia K4 may not appeal to everyone, the newly announced pricing strengthens its value proposition. With confirmed pricing, the hatch version of Kia’s compact model will arrive next year in three trims, each aiming to undercut most competitors without appearing basic.

The entry-level K4 EX starts at $24,890, not including the destination fee of $1,195. This price is higher than that of the entry-level sedan, largely due to the Hatchback lacking the LX and LXS variants.

      How Does It Compare?

When compared to the mid-range K4 EX Sedan priced at $24,390, there is only a $500 difference. In exchange, buyers receive a more adaptable body style with extra cargo capacity—an appealing trade-off.

On the competitive front, the K4 Hatchback is priced $710 more than the Toyota Corolla hatch ($24,180), but it is $2,905 less than the Honda Civic hatch and $660 cheaper than the Mazda 3 hatchback.

Positioned in the middle of the K4 Hatchback lineup is the GT-Line, starting at $25,890, while the top trim, the K4 GT-Line Turbo, starts at $28,790.

      Powertrain Choices

Both the EX and GT-Line are equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, coupled with what Kia refers to as an “intelligently variable transmission” (IVT), which is their version of a CVT.

For those desiring more power, the GT-Line Turbo features a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder delivering 190 hp and 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque, replacing the IVT with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to the increased power, both GT-Line models come with a sport-tuned suspension designed to enhance handling while maintaining a degree of comfort.

However, one drawback is its fuel economy, with the EX and GT-Line achieving 30 mpg combined, and the GT-Line Turbo rated at 28 mpg.

      Abundant Options

K4 buyers have access to a variety of options. The GT-Line and GT-Line Turbo can be outfitted with the Red Interior Color Package, which includes black and red seating, a red-accented steering wheel, and matching interior trim for $295.

GT-Line buyers may also upgrade to the Premium Package for $1,200. This package includes a Harman Kardon audio system, memory functions for the driver seat and side mirrors, ventilated front seats, a 12.3-inch digital display integrating cluster and infotainment, acoustic glass for the windshield, a heated steering wheel, and a power sunroof.

Additionally, it features an array of driver-assist technologies, including Kia AI Assist, Highway Driving Assist (HAD), and Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control with Curve (NSCC-C).

At the highest tier of options is the GT-Line Turbo Technology Package, priced at $2,300. This package further enhances the feature set with adjustable ambient lighting, Kia’s Digital Key 2.0, a surround-view camera system, blind-spot view monitor, forward collision-avoidance assist, and ventilated front seats.
