The electric Lexus LFA represents not just the revival of an iconic vehicle, but aims to change the game in its category.

On December 4, at Toyota’s Woven City near Fuji, Japan, GR GT Project Manager Takashi Doi shared with media that the objective of the electric Lexus LFA is “to redefine the sound of an electric sports car.”

This initiative was guided by the company’s chairman, Akio Toyoda.

Doi mentioned that the team recognizes the variety of electric sports cars available today and is still in the process of determining the sound profile for the electric LFA. No final decision has been made yet, and it remains unclear if the LFA will emulate conventional engine sounds or start from scratch.

“We are very serious about getting the sound right,” Doi remarked.

According to Doi, sports cars must deliver fun and emotional engagement, along with performance—and the electric LFA must excel in all these areas.

Sound may not be the only goal for the electric LFA. It is also anticipated that this supercar may introduce Toyota’s first production solid-state battery packs. Unlike many electric vehicles that use a flat skateboard chassis, the LFA shares its aluminum space frame with the GR GT and GR GT3. This allows for room in the hood, transmission tunnel, and behind the rear seats, where the gas-powered transmission is located, for a T-shaped battery pack.

We are approximately two to three years away from the electric LFA becoming a reality, but it appears poised to redefine what a future sports car can be in various aspects.

Toyota sponsored travel, accommodations, and provided food, which included raw fish that I chose not to eat, to facilitate this first-hand report.
