The successor to the ForTwo is set to be unveiled next year, featuring a refreshed design and a completely new platform.

Smart has teased the #2 ahead of its launch next year. This vehicle is an electric successor to the ForTwo city car, with Mercedes responsible for the interior and exterior design.

The ForTwo was a defining model for the Smart brand, but production ceased in 2024 as the company underwent significant changes. Nevertheless, a new version is in development and is expected to make a global debut next year.

After releasing several shadowy teasers this fall, Smart has unveiled the first images of the #2. While it remains instantly recognizable, this is due to it being a test mule with ForTwo bodywork.

As a result, there isn’t much to glean from the images; however, Smart has confirmed that the #2 will maintain the original's ultra-compact dimensions. They stated that their new take on the city car will uphold several features from the original, including a two-door, two-seat layout, rear-wheel drive, and a “wheels-at-the-corners stance.”

Despite evoking a sense of familiarity, the model will boast a completely redesigned interior and exterior by the Mercedes design team, providing it with a “fresh identity” and modern aesthetic.

While specifics remain limited, the #2 is expected to follow the design philosophy of recent models like the #1, #3, and #5. This suggests that it will likely feature an enclosed front fascia with a light bar connecting the headlights, along with flush-mounted door handles, sleek bodywork, and a minimalist interior.

Smart has kept details confidential, but it has confirmed that the vehicle will utilize the new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), which will serve as the foundation for a next-generation electric drivetrain, enhanced safety features, and a unique urban driving experience.

Although there is limited information available, test mules are currently undergoing evaluations worldwide. A significant portion of this testing is happening at a proving ground in China, where engineers are refining the ride, handling, and braking performance. Additional facilities are focused on battery testing, crash safety, and assessing the climate control system's performance in varied conditions.

While there is still much to accomplish, the #2 is slated for a late next-year launch. Upon its release, the model aims to "set new benchmarks for the city car segment that Smart established nearly thirty years ago."
