If you’ve been looking forward to the return of the Honda Prelude, you might find it surprising that this hybrid sports coupe cannot be revved while parked. Its distinctive two-motor hybrid system has no transmission, and the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine operates solely as a gas generator at lower speeds. However, this doesn't clarify why stepping on the accelerator in park doesn’t produce any response.

Curious whether this limitation stems from engineering constraints or was a conscious decision by Honda, we contacted the manufacturer. Here’s their response:

“All Honda’s hybrid models, including the Prelude, are designed not to rev while idling,” a representative stated. “This is a software feature that reflects our commitment to providing a clean, fuel-efficient hybrid lineup.”

So there it is. There isn't a technical reason preventing the Prelude from revving when stationary, which makes sense. After all, pressing the gas pedal at lower speeds engages the engine, even though it's not connected to the wheels at that moment. Additionally, the Prelude incorporates synthesized engine sounds in the cabin and, as Honda has prominently highlighted, artificial gear shifts. Despite its eco-friendly focus, the sports coupe aims to replicate aspects of a traditional driving experience.

This may be a divisive viewpoint, but I believe it doesn't really matter much. To be candid, those who opt for a new Prelude instead of a Civic Si or a Hyundai Elantra N, for example, are not specifically seeking a compact sport model. The hybrid system is likely a draw for them, along with the associated fuel efficiency. I don’t think the inability to rev is inconsistent with Honda’s intended audience. What’s your take?
