Startup automaker Rivian is firmly convinced that Apple CarPlay is not the way forward. The executive team is so determined about this that they have developed a proprietary solution to meet consumer demands.

At Rivian's Autonomy and AI day held in Palo Alto, California, the company introduced the Rivian Assistant—its own solution for providing text messaging features and much more directly in its vehicles. This function is anticipated to roll out gradually in early 2026 for both the first- and second-generation R1 models, and it will be available on the R2 upon its launch in 2026.

Rivian Assistant is a voice-activated system capable of controlling the entire vehicle with full AI integration, although Rivian has not disclosed which AI system powers it. This innovative feature will facilitate text messaging but will extend capabilities beyond mere texting.

The system will allow users to send text messages via voice commands and read incoming messages as well. There will also be an on-screen component that displays messages, both incoming and outgoing, providing visual confirmation of what is being communicated, which is something Apple CarPlay currently does not offer.

Additionally, Rivian Assistant will be able to integrate with third-party applications like Google Calendar, incorporating these elements into the vehicle's native navigation or even allowing the system to modify those applications, such as rescheduling an appointment in Google Calendar.

The aim of this technology is to “get people off their phones,” according to a spokesperson for Rivian.

Users will be able to voice commands like “can you navigate to my next appointment,” or “what’s on my calendar,” or instruct the system to send a text message, with the ability to view that message on the screen.

“This is not just phone mirroring; this is next-level technology,” a Rivian spokesperson explained.

Since the assistant is integrated into the vehicle, actions that previously required several taps and swipes on a touchscreen can now be accomplished with simple voice commands, such as saying, “make all the seats toasty except mine.”

“We are progressing beyond a screen-based interaction; we’re heading toward a context-driven future,” a Rivian spokesperson remarked when discussing why this voice system is superior to phone mirroring, such as Apple CarPlay.

Robby DeGraff, AutoPacific’s product and consumer insights manager, shared with The Drive, “Familiarity is a key reason why Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are essential for consumers. We spend a lot of time on our phones and tablets, growing accustomed to their operating systems, and we wish to maintain that familiarity and ease of use while driving.”

“If more automakers can achieve the same level of intuitive experience in their software and infotainment systems, we may see more consumers willing to explore alternatives beyond traditional Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity. However, this approach must be executed flawlessly; it cannot be half-hearted,” DeGraff stated.

Rivian Assistant will utilize the vehicle’s data connection and will be part of the automaker’s Connect+ data package, priced at $14.99 per month or $149.99 annually following a free 60-day trial.

Rivian indicated that integration with third-party agents will be introduced “a little later” after the initial phased rollout of Rivian Assistant in early 2026.
