Although I’ve never personally used a Sonic tool, I've spent plenty of time browsing their products online—their tool sets are impressively elegant and well-organized, albeit beyond my budget. Today, they unveiled a track-day specific set called the Mobile Track Kit, in collaboration with Keis Motorsports. It may not be affordable, but it certainly looks striking.
The “MTK” is a 124-piece toolkit that fits neatly into a branded Pelican-style carrying case. The selection of tools was made by Bryan Kiefer, the CEO of Kies Motorsports, a tuning shop in New Jersey that specializes in BMWs but also works with Porsche and other European cars. The tools included were chosen based on "years of experience at the track, reflecting a thorough understanding of what high-performance vehicles require for on-site repairs and adjustments," according to the press release.
“Our partnership with Sonic allows us to create the solution we’ve always wanted: a robust, portable, organized track kit that accurately meets the needs of performance vehicles away from the workshop,” said Kiefer.
Kies performs aftermarket parts installations and dyno tuning at their facility in Hammonton, New Jersey.
Sonic’s MTK is metric-based and appears to be particularly suited for BMWs and Porsches, although it should be effective for most European or Japanese cars. It has an appearance reminiscent of a trendy fashion collaboration; “KIES” is etched into many of the tools, and there's an emblem on the exterior of the case.
The kit includes a wide variety of sockets, wobblers, extensions, bits, wrenches, and other standard tools, as well as specialty sockets, hooks, and pullers for more intricate tasks. This PDF contains a complete list of everything included:
I really appreciate how sleek and organized the kit looks … did I mention that already? It truly puts my Sterilite box for track-day tools to shame.
That being said, it is notably more expensive—the MTK is priced at $2,315. As I mentioned, Sonic’s products always exceed my budget! Aside from the tool quality and the curated appeal, the brand offers a lifetime warranty. “Our online warranty process takes only 2-3 minutes, and your replacement tool will be sent to you. Typically, replacement tools ship within 48 hours,” Sonic states.
You don’t need to point out how much more affordable you can find similar tools at Harbor Freight. We’re aware of that. This kit is constructed to a superior standard and likely has a better scent.
The only real drawback I see (aside from the price) is that the kit reportedly weighs just over 100 pounds, making it challenging to lift into a trunk on your way to the track. Perhaps I don't need to rush to replace my plastic tool set from Walmart just yet. However, I truly enjoyed looking at the photos of this new kit and thought you might as well.
And if you’re interested in assembling your own set with more affordable tools, feel free to use the parts list!
