The angular family SUV faces a challenge from a malfunctioning camera, while Hyundai also announces a smaller airbag recall.

Hyundai is recalling 143,472 Santa Fes due to issues with reverse cameras.

The rearview camera feed can fail when the driver shifts into reverse.

Additionally, Hyundai is recalling 258 other vehicles for an airbag defect.

The new Santa Fe from Hyundai may appear ready for adventure with its robust design and outdoor aesthetic, but over 143,000 units are being sent back to dealers for a more ordinary reason. Instead of navigating obstacles or crossing streams, these SUVs are hindered by the basic reverse camera.

This problem affects 2024 and 2025 Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid models in the US. As per documents submitted to the safety regulator, the issue arises when the driver engages reverse, causing the rear camera to stop working just when it’s needed most.

The feed may completely cut out, leaving drivers looking at a blank screen instead of any potential hazards behind them.

Hyundai identified the issue as stemming from an improperly assembled wiring harness, the responsibility of a supplier in Alabama, not the automaker itself. The poor assembly can lead to increased tension and wear in the cable's shield line, which results in inadequate terminal contact when connected to the camera, according to the NHTSA.

This is just the latest in a series of rearview visibility issues affecting the industry. Nearly every brand has experienced camera malfunctions prompting recalls in recent years, and with the equipment now mandatory in the US, this means a significant number of potentially defective camera systems.

Hyundai's solution involves replacing the faulty wiring harness with a new, more flexible version, which has already been installed in new Santa Fe models since September.

Owners should expect a letter with instructions on how to obtain the repair for free at a dealer. In the meantime, Santa Fe drivers may need to resort to traditional methods like checking mirrors and turning their heads. It’s old-fashioned, but effective.

Hyundai has also announced a second recall worth noting, though it concerns a much smaller number of vehicles. This recall affects 258 cars at risk due to a curtain-airbag defect, including the Santa Cruz truck, Santa Fe, Tucson, and the Genesis GV70 from the sister brand.
