Citroen's Budget Fastback Appears Sporty Only When Stationary | Carscoops
The Citroen Basalt lowers its ride height, adds an oversized diffuser, and impressively still labels itself a concept.
Stellantis debuted the Basalt Vision concept at the Sao Paulo Motor Show.
It boasts a lowered suspension and 18-inch wheels featuring red brake calipers.
It includes a diffuser, dual exhausts, and a rear spoiler, but lacks any performance enhancements.
The Citroen Basalt / C3 X is an economical fastback crossover available in South America and India, designed for practical buyers seeking a bit of flair. Despite its humble beginnings, the carmaker has introduced a sportier concept version, currently displayed at the 2025 Sao Paulo International Motor Show in Brazil.
This new concept, initially teased online during last year's launch, retains the Basalt Vision name used for the 2024 prototype. The latest iteration adopts a performance-oriented aesthetic, featuring a reduced ride height and several enhancements that contribute to a sportier appearance.
The lowered suspension and new 18-inch wheels notably enhance the Basalt's visual appeal, especially when compared to the bulky production model equipped with 16-inch wheels.
What really stands out is the large glossy black diffuser on the rear bumper, which incorporates an F1-style brake light and dual chrome tailpipes.
The fastback rear of the Basalt has also received black trim between the LED taillights, emphasizing the ducktail spoiler, complemented by a roof spoiler.
Additional details enhance the overall look: André Red accents outline the bodywork, decals adorn the sides and hood, and Vision badges are positioned on the doors. The concept retains Citroen's classic double-chevron emblem, now rendered in black.
The vehicle is based on the Basalt Dark Edition, the highest trim available in Brazil, meaning the modifications are superficial. Despite its more aggressive stance, there are no hidden performance upgrades.
Power is provided by the familiar turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine, generating up to 128 hp (96 kW / 130 hp) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) of torque when fueled by ethanol. While that might not seem impressive, it represents the strongest configuration in Citroen’s local lineup.
The engine powers the front wheels via a CVT transmission with seven simulated gears.
The Basalt Vision appears to be more of a design study than a precursor to an actual trim level that would fit awkwardly within Citroen’s current offerings. However, it wouldn't be surprising if a modest appearance package emerges from it, similar to the C3 Sport Edition available in India.
While the Citroen Basalt / C3 X is expected to remain confined to South American and Indian markets, Fiat is developing a mechanically similar fastback that will also be launched in Europe as part of the extended Panda family.
In addition to the revised Vision Basalt, other Citroen displays at the Sao Paulo International Motor Show include the new generation of the C5 Aircross, the Ami Tonic and Buggy urban EVs, and the latest Formula E single-seater from the French brand.
