Do you recall when Dodge discontinued the Durango V6? Well, there's more to it. | Carscoops
The Pentastar V6 is making a return, but it may not be the best choice for you.
Dodge has reintroduced the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 to the Durango after it was previously removed when the 2026 model transitioned to being Hemi-only due to supply challenges.
Originally announced earlier this year, the 2026 Durango solely featured the Hemi engine, marking the end of the 3.6-liter V6, but it has now made an unanticipated comeback.
The 2026 Durango GT, which is now available for order, features the familiar V6 that generates 295 hp (220 kW / 299 PS) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque. This return has resulted in a price reduction from $42,695 to $38,995, offering a significant savings of $3,700.
However, there is a slight catch: the entry-level GT is rear-wheel drive by default. Choosing all-wheel drive increases the price by $2,000, making the difference a more modest $1,700.
Spending the extra money could be worthwhile, as the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 produces 360 hp (268 kW / 365 PS) and 390 lb-ft (528 Nm) of torque, allowing the model to reach 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 6.2 seconds, which is 1.2 seconds quicker than the V6.
What prompted Dodge's decision?
Dodge did not elaborate much but suggested that the V6's revival was due to Hemi V8 supply limitations. As Dodge CEO Matt McAlear mentioned, “The Hemi is hot … and to maintain that sales momentum, we are reopening orders for the V6 Durango GT to help meet Durango demand while Hemi engine production increases.”
In addition to these two engines, the 2026 Durango also offers a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 generating 710 hp (529 kW / 720 PS) and 645 lb-ft (874 Nm) of torque. This version, the $79,995 SRT Hellcat, can accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h).
These options will soon be complemented by the 2026 Durango R/T, expected early next year, which will be priced below $50,000. It will feature a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 producing 475 hp (354 kW / 482 PS) and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) of torque.
