It's quite rare for a completely new Jeep model to be introduced, but that's exactly what we have with the new Recon. This is a unibody off-roader that runs solely on electric power. The iconic automaker has been hinting at its arrival for some time, and we’ve had a decent idea of its design for about three years. However, this is the official reveal, and I must admit, it’s quite intriguing.
The demand for this type of vehicle has decreased significantly since Jeep started its development, and the regulatory environment it faces is more challenging, especially with the EV tax credit now gone. Hopefully, you or someone else with a bank account will find the Recon's specifications enticing enough to shell out $66,995, not including destination fees.

It certainly boasts impressive performance, with 650 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque. With Sport mode engaged, it can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds. I'm not sure if those figures are what Jeep enthusiasts prioritize, but they’re there nonetheless.
A more relevant way to evaluate the Recon’s off-road capabilities is by considering its basics. This four-door SUV has a wheelbase of 112.9 inches, which is 3.8 inches shorter than the Grand Cherokee’s and 5.5 inches shorter than the Wrangler Unlimited’s. However, when it comes to overall length, it’s just .2 inches shorter than a Grand Cherokee and 4.9 inches longer than a four-door Wrangler. Ground clearance is somewhat unimpressive at 9.1 inches, despite the Moab trim coming with standard 33-inch all-terrain tires.

I’m sure these tires contribute to the Recon’s estimated maximum range of 250 miles from its 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack. The boxy design likely plays a significant role in this as well, and I’m interested to see how far it could travel on a charge with the doors removed. Luckily, you won’t need tools to take them off.
Jeep highlights in its press release that the Recon is equipped with Selec-Terrain traction management. This system offers five modes you can switch between for various weather conditions and terrains, with the Moab model featuring an additional sixth mode for rock crawling. It also includes a locking rear differential, but the front differential remains open.

The interior is indeed quite stylish, clearly surpassing the base Wrangler in terms of quality. A standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is included, alongside a sizable 14.5-inch horizontal infotainment display, which is reportedly the largest in a Jeep. It operates on the familiar UConnect 5 system, featuring a new Trails Offroad app that offers a thorough guide to off-road routes across the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, because the Recon is an EV, it includes Dynamic Range Mapping to assist in planning charging stops for long trips (or even just medium ones).

I think the Recon has great potential on paper, but I'm uncertain about its real-world performance given the steep price. If off-roading is your top priority, the Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited is a much clearer choice at about $12,000 less. You can even opt for a Wrangler Rubicon 4xe plug-in hybrid for a lower price. You would really have to prefer an electric vehicle over a gas engine to choose the Recon—or at least really not want a Wrangler.
Perhaps that describes you, though.
