I’m fairly certain you’ve never envisioned a Nissan GT-R SUV. I could be mistaken, but I highly doubt it. This isn't the case for Infiniti, Nissan's luxury division, which has a QX80 to showcase. The company has opted for a bold SEMA build featuring a 1,000-horsepower engine from a GT-R Nismo, striking Midnight Purple paint, a lowered stance, and an eye-catching body kit to emphasize the tuner aesthetic.

This vehicle is named the QX80 R-Spec. You might assume that such a name suggests it could be manufactured—even if only in limited quantities. However, that's not true, as an Infiniti representative informed us that this is “a creative exercise for the brand. It’s designed to inspire rather than to sell.” They also noted that driving it isn’t an option. How disappointing!

The color-shifting SUV is equipped with substantial aftermarket enhancements on the VR38DETT engine, featuring Garrett G-series turbos connected to ETS exhaust manifolds. It operates on a flex-fuel system with massive 2,600cc injectors and a Fuel Lab pump. All of this should make for a fairly quick SUV, even though its curb weight is similar to the approximately 6,000-pound standard model.

Infiniti has infused GT-R elements throughout, including burnt-blue exhaust tips and 24-inch wheels. Perhaps the most noticeable reference to the Godzilla supercar is its paint, which Nissan frequently incorporates across its lineup. In fact, that’s the most distinctive aspect of the Z Heritage Edition that the automaker introduced previously.

I’m not one to complain about projects like this that are created solely for show purposes. I don’t even mind performance SUVs when executed well. However, I can’t help but think this QX80 R-Spec would be more enjoyable in an acceleration test than on a track like Fuji or Tsukuba. If you prefer something that excels in one of those environments, you’d likely be better off writing to the new Nissan CEO and urging them to fast-track the R36 development.

Did anyone request a QX80 that is lowered and widened, complete with blue exhaust tips? Perhaps not, but it exists nonetheless.
