Porsche’s current electric vehicles, which aren't particularly old, will not be able to utilize the manufacturer’s advanced wireless charging technology set to launch with the 2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric, all due to physical limitations.

Dr. Maximilian Müller, head of high voltage engineering, explained to The Drive while examining the 2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric in Leipzig, Germany, that the hardware for the wireless charging system simply won't fit into the Macan Electric and Taycan.

The Cayenne Electric is larger than both the Taycan and Macan Electric. While passengers will enjoy increased legroom and space, this larger size means the vehicle’s structure is wider than Porsche’s existing electric models, even though the Cayenne Electric uses the same PPE platform as the smaller Macan Electric.

The challenge for the Macan Electric and Taycan lies in the width between their front suspensions.

The inductive charging plate is positioned beneath the front motor in the Cayenne Electric, precisely located between the front wheels and suspension system.

The increased dimensions of the Cayenne Electric also necessitated a different suspension geometry than that of the Macan Electric. Müller pointed out that this results in further compatibility issues that prevent retrofitting into the existing electric vehicles, making it more complicated than just a simple installation.

Müller mentioned that wireless charging is “something that’s in discussion” for Porsche’s future EVs, but he did not provide any details on upcoming products.
