GM and Ford Urge Trump to Prevent Stellantis from Receiving Favorable Treatment | Carscoops

The Trump administration has recently declared tariffs on heavy-duty trucks imported from Mexico.

Stellantis has requested exemption from tariffs that could reach as high as 25 percent on its pickup trucks.

General Motors and Ford are against this waiver, arguing that it would create an unfair advantage for Stellantis over U.S.-produced competitors. The duties imposed by the Trump administration could potentially cost the Ram manufacturer close to $2 billion.

GM and Ford are resisting Stellantis' plea for relief from a possible 25 percent tariff on its medium-duty Ram pickups manufactured in Mexico. They contend that easing or waiving the tariff would grant Stellantis an unfair competitive edge and are advocating for uniform regulations throughout the industry.

      Tariffs Under Evaluation

In April, the U.S. Commerce Department initiated an investigation into the importation of heavy trucks, concentrating on medium- and heavy-duty models to strengthen domestic manufacturing. Although Trump has already enforced a 25 percent tariff on heavy-duty trucks, a definitive ruling on medium-duty imports is still awaited, even though he had promised to reveal one by October 1.

Recently, Stellantis has been lobbying the administration regarding the potential import duty on medium-duty trucks. However, GM and Ford have also been appealing to the government, requesting that Stellantis not be granted advantages over trucks produced in the U.S. that utilize imported components, which are also subject to tariffs.

According to Crain’s Detroit Business, Stellantis produced over 200,000 Ram 2500 and 3500 medium-duty trucks at its Saltillo facility in Mexico in 2024, generating an estimated revenue of $13.8 billion for Stellantis in the previous year. The new tariffs could lead to a loss of up to $2 billion in adjusted annual operating income.

      Ford Maintains Its Position

Ford has recently expressed support for the U.S. administration's tariff on heavy-duty trucks, which is not unexpected as it manufactures all of its heavy-duty trucks domestically.

“Ford values the Trump administration’s recent decisions regarding heavy trucks, which aligns with our mutual objective of enhancing the American auto industry and U.S. manufacturing,” stated Mark Truby, the company’s chief communications officer. “American autoworkers deserve a fair competitive environment.”

The timeline for when the Trump administration will make a decision regarding medium-duty truck tariffs remains uncertain.
