Initial Reviews of the 2026 Model Y Performance Are Here, and Opinions Are Split | Carscoops
Top Gear regards the Model Y Performance as capable and refined, but principally aimed at specific buyers looking for enhanced performance.
The Model Y Performance boasts 460bhp, achieving 0-62 mph in 3.5 seconds and features adaptive suspension.
While Top Gear acknowledges its stability and refinement, it points out that the Long Range AWD variant provides better value.
In the UK, the starting price is £61,925 (about $75,500), which is approximately £10,000 more than the Long Range AWD. In the US, the difference is slightly less at $8,500. Nevertheless, Top Gear suggests that this premium might make buyers reconsider opting for the Performance version.
Tom Ford from the renowned British automotive publication tested the updated Performance model and noted that despite its impressive performance, the enhancements do not necessarily make it indispensable. He confirmed that the SUV is definitely faster and more responsive, but the standard Long Range model already reaches 62 mph in under five seconds, offers marginally more range, and is priced £10,000 lower in the UK.
The additional features included for the higher price consist of staggered Arachnid 2.0 21-inch wheels, red calipers, revised bumpers, and a carbon spoiler. Tesla claims to have reduced drag by 10% and lift by 64% compared to the original Model Y Performance. Other upgrades include a larger 16-inch infotainment screen, carbon interior accents, and sport seats with enhanced bolstering.
On a technical level, there are many appealing aspects, with reinforced suspension components, stiffer bushings, and adaptive features. Ford describes it as “class-leading.” However, he notes that the overall improvements do not warrant an enthusiastic endorsement. “It’s not a world apart from the standard variant,” he remarks.
Examining the practical side for everyday consumers, Ford emphasizes that this is a relatively mainstream crossover, rather than a premium model like the Model X.
He mentioned, “The Model Y is a family SUV, so additional performance isn’t necessarily required – that speed makes more sense in something like a Model 3. Plus, the standard all-wheel drive long-range model still achieves sub-five seconds to 62 mph, has slightly greater range, looks nearly identical, and is a straight £10k cheaper.”
Ultimately, while the Model Y Performance does offer an upgrade in driving engagement compared to the Long Range, the improvements are not significantly transformative.
This raises questions about whether Tesla could have included more enhancements. For instance, simulated gear shifts and exciting faux exhaust sounds, similar to what Hyundai provides with the pricier Ioniq 5 N, could have added to the enjoyment. We'll need to wait to test the model in the US to form our own conclusions. Until then, what are your thoughts on the updated high-spec Model Y?
