Toyota May Finally Create a GR Sports Car Independently | Carscoops
Toyota implies "never say never" regarding the potential revival of the Supra brand.
In a recent statement, Toyota hinted it may be gearing up to develop a Gazoo Racing sports car independently.
Previous collaborations with Subaru and BMW have played a role in shaping the Supra and GR 86 lineage.
There are reports suggesting that Toyota is looking to bring back the Celica nameplate infused with Gazoo Racing characteristics.
Toyota’s aspirations for performance vehicles have expanded since the Supra was relaunched in collaboration with BMW in 2019. The growth of its Gazoo Racing division has led to the introduction of successful models like the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. Now that the Supra is nearing the end of its life cycle, Toyota has indicated that it could potentially design a new sports car without relying on another manufacturer.
When asked if Toyota might explore a solo venture in the future, the Australian Sales and Marketing chief suggested it was a possibility, though he refrained from confirming any current projects in that direction.
Can Toyota Truly Go Solo?
“The answer is yes; we can handle this independently,” Hanley stated to Australia’s Drive. “This is the essence of GR. That said, we have gained significant insights from our partnerships, notably with BMW, who produce some exceptional vehicles, so we value that relationship greatly – it has been a fruitful collaboration for learning about performance cars.”
When directly questioned on the prospect of an independent Gazoo Racing sports car, Hanley was clear. “Can I envision a day when we produce our own independent, stand-alone Toyota Gazoo Racing performance car? Yes, absolutely. Stay tuned.”
Supra, Celica, or Something Else?
Hanley did not specify whether a new sports car might represent the next iteration of the Supra or if it would be an entirely new model. However, he recognized that “Supra carries a tremendously strong legacy,” and mentioned that “you never say never” in relation to bringing the Supra brand back.
Interestingly, numerous reports have emerged suggesting that Toyota has already approved the development of a new generation Supra, possibly set for release as early as 2027. Additionally, recent information indicates that Toyota is looking to resurrect the Celica nameplate with a new GR variant featuring a mid-engine design, all-wheel drive, and an output of roughly 400 horsepower.
