Mazda's top MX-5 isn't available for purchase in the U.S., but you can experience it in GT7 | Carscoops
This unique MX-5 marks the inaugural production model from the newly established Mazda Spirit Racing division.
Mazda has launched the Spirit Racing 12R as a limited-production version of the MX-5, with only 200 units being produced and exclusively available in Japan.
Enhancements include a 197 hp engine, Bilstein dampers, and a reinforced chassis.
In an era where new vehicles are increasingly heavier and larger, the Mazda MX-5 distinguishes itself with its compact and lightweight design. Thus, it's logical for the brand to utilize it to debut the Mazda Spirit Racing division last year, introducing a sportier iteration of the MX-5, called the 12R.
Regrettably, the production of this model is limited to just 200 units and will only be available in the Japanese market. To perhaps satisfy those who may never have the opportunity to drive or own the 12R, Mazda has included it in Gran Turismo 7. While driving it in a game won't compare to the real experience, it still offers some semblance of access.
Mazda has taken measures to ensure that the MX-5 12R in Gran Turismo 7 closely resembles the actual model. The car was scanned to ensure accuracy, and Mazda also recorded its exhaust sound. Players will be able to drive the MX-5 for 12,000,000 credits.
The Mazda Spirit Racing division was created to succeed Mazdaspeed, which was discontinued over ten years ago. The 12R has received several upgrades to enhance its capabilities as a canyon carver or track vehicle while maintaining the on-road comfort and poise that have made the compact roadster an icon.
**Mechanical Enhancements**
The 12R’s 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine has been upgraded with new components, including updated camshafts, custom pistons, a modified cylinder head, and a new exhaust manifold, resulting in a peak output of 197 hp. To complement the added performance, the vehicle features Bilstein dampers, enhanced underbody bracing, and high-performance tires for improved handling.
The exterior has also been thoughtfully enhanced. Standard features include lightweight six-spoke black Rays TE37 wheels, vibrant red brake calipers, extended side skirts, and a unique front splitter. Together, these elements give the MX-5 12R a purposeful appearance while preserving its clean, classic proportions.
