The Acura ZDX, which was recently revived (and I use that term generously), has already been put on hold. After less than 18 months in the market, Acura’s version of the Prologue—essentially a duplicate of the Chevy Blazer EV—has been placed on indefinite hiatus, just days before federal EV incentives are set to expire.
Is this a coincidence? It would be unreasonable to believe so.
Honda has confirmed to InsideEVs that production of the ZDX has ceased immediately. A company spokesperson pointed to “market conditions” (meaning the impending end of the tax credit) as a key reason for this decision, but a quick look at the figures suggests this may be the sole reason for the ZDX's discontinuation.
Tariffs likely play a minor role as well, but considering that the ZDX is built on a GM-sourced platform, it is more American than many EVs with Japanese branding. A study from the Kogod School of Business indicates that the ZDX is only slightly less American in terms of material sourcing compared to the most common versions of the Chevy Silverado.
On the other hand, the Prologue, which is Honda's more affordable option built on the same basic platform, continues to be produced. Honda sold over 33,000 of these all-electric midsize SUVs in 2024, whereas ZDX sales reached just under 7,400.
The outlook for the ZDX was promising until June of this year, at which point Acura had sold over 10,000 units, positioning the brand to potentially triple last year's sales and surpass the Integra in total sales for the year. However, ZDX sales sharply declined in July and August.
We suspect the ZDX won't be the last model affected by the upcoming 2024 election. With the tax credit nearing expiration, we anticipate more models may exit showrooms before the year's end.
