The next-generation X7 will give rise to the first-ever iX7, and we have captured images to substantiate this.

BMW's inaugural iX7 SUV has been spotted during testing in Germany.

The electric variant of the upcoming X7 is anticipated to launch in 2027.

It will feature design elements from the Neue Klasse, but will utilize the older CLAR platform.

The recently unveiled 2026 iX3 at the Munich Motor Show marks the beginning of several electric models BMW plans to release over the next five years. Among these, the largest is the new iX7, which has been photographed during test runs for the first time.

A few months ago, we shared images of the standard next-generation X7, but that model’s quad exhausts confirmed it was a combustion version, likely powered by a hybrid-assisted 4.4-liter V8.

      No Tailpipes, No Sound

In contrast, the prototype captured in these recent images does not have tailpipes or a large transverse silencer under the rear bumper. Our photographers noted that it stayed almost completely silent, even when the driver fully accelerated right in front of them, indicating it wasn't a PHEV.

BMW has not previously offered electric iX variants of the X5 and X7, but that is set to change. The iX5 is expected to debut next year, followed by the iX7 in 2027. Both models will adopt the Neue Klasse design seen on the iX3 and the forthcoming electric 3-Series in the next year. However, unlike those vehicles, the X5/iX5 and X7/iX7 will feature updated versions of the older CLAR architecture that underpins the current X5 and X7 SUVs.

      Similar Appearance, Different Powertrains

Since both petrol and electric versions of the G67-code X7 will share the same platform, significant styling differences between them are not likely. Neither will completely adopt the Neue Klasse aesthetic with a visor-type front end. From the spy images, it appears that the next X7 will maintain a large grille and a two-level lighting arrangement, catering to its older and more traditional customer base compared to the iX3.

Nonetheless, the iX7 will incorporate some of the advanced infotainment and electrical systems found in its smaller counterpart. BMW’s innovative cylindrical battery cells are about 20 percent more energy-dense than standard models, facilitating greater driving range and, along with 800-volt electrics, quicker charging times. The iX3 has an EPA rating of 400 miles (644 km), and it's likely that the iX7 will also be well-suited for long-distance travel with an even larger battery exceeding 110 kWh.

      Power with Space

The first variant of the iX3 to be launched will be the 50 xDrive, offering 463 hp (345 kW / 469 PS) from dual motors. However, mid- to high-end variants of the iX7 are expected to require and deliver even more power. An M70 performance version with over 800 hp (811 PS / 597 kW) could be on the cards, and there have been discussions about an Alpina variant for the iX7 that would add an additional 100 horsepower on top of that.
